2024 officially a record breaking weather year

The Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that 2024 was Australia's second-warmest and eighth-wettest year on record.

00:43Tropical cyclones brought heavy rainfall to northern parts of Australia early in the year.

00:49Low intensity to severe heatwave conditions affected large parts of Australia during early

00:54and late 2024.

00:56And frequent slow-moving high-pressure systems to the south of the mainland also affected

01:01temperature and rainfall across Australia throughout the year.

01:07Globally, 2024 was the warmest year on record, and each decade since 1980 has been warmer

01:13than the last.

01:15Australia's climate has warmed by an average of 1.55 degrees Celsius between 1910 and 2024,

01:23and the warming in Australia is consistent with global trends.
