Sweden's deadliest mass shooting sparks debate on gun laws and extremism

Sweden has seen a rise in far-right rhetoric. After 11 people died in the country’s worst ever gun spree, some now fear that words have turned into violence.   CGTN’s Pablo Gutierrez reports from Orebro.  #Sweden

00:00The Rysberska school campus was a place of learning.

00:06A fresh start for many adults looking to learn a new skill.

00:10Now, it's the scene of Sweden's deadliest mass shooting.

00:15She was one of the kind. She always laughed at silly things.

00:19And I laughed.

00:22You know, when we work, we have been working with her in the nursing home.

00:28That is how friends remember Camilla, an immigrant mother who was taking classes to become a nursing assistant, but was fatally shot.

00:36A 52-year-old mother, three children, one husband.

00:41Also among the dead is 29-year-old Salim Iskev, who fled war-torn Syria in 2015, hoping for a better future in Sweden.

00:52Investigators are now examining whether this was a hate-motivated attack.

00:58Many of the students at this campus are immigrants who were taking Swedish language classes and vocational courses.

01:06Multiple others remain hospitalized with gunshot wounds in serious but stable conditions.

01:12The attack has left many in this community in shock.

01:16Yeah, I was lucky that I left before that happened, but still sad because so many lost their lives.

01:28The shooter, a 35-year-old man who had been unemployed for over a decade, was found dead at the scene after police say he shot himself.

01:37Investigators are now reviewing his background and past statements.

01:42After reports surfaced that he held anti-immigrant views.

01:47It's painful to think, you know, everything that happened.

01:53The government says it will seek to tighten gun laws in the wake of the country's deadliest mass shooting.

01:59The attack has also raised questions about whether security at Sweden's schools needs to be better.

02:06But for those in Orebro, there are many more questions they need answers to.
