00:00Pistol shrimp also possess a stealthy superpower.
00:05They've obviously got that super big claw,
00:08and that means there's a lot of muscle in there,
00:10it's a big strong arm,
00:11with what seems like a tiny, tiny little snipper,
00:14which doesn't seem very good for tearing flesh,
00:16and that's because it's not for tearing flesh.
00:19That tiny little snipper is actually a trigger
00:22to fire the pistol.
00:26So the shrimp's pistol is its pincer.
00:29But how is it discharged?
00:32There's a socket in the claw which is full of water.
00:36When the cocked part is released,
00:39it smashes down into the chamber,
00:41which sends a jet of water surging forwards
00:44at a speed of 30 metres per second.
00:49Moving at this velocity actually vaporises the water into a bubble
00:54with a temperature of 4,000 degrees Celsius.
00:59That's three times hotter than volcanic lava.
01:04As the bubble collapses, it creates a shockwave
01:08which can stun or even kill prey.
01:12And all of this happens at a speed
01:15too fast for the human eye to see.
01:19Now that is an ocean wonder.
01:28.
