00:00Why is it that this issue of the plight of the Palestinians is one that seems to have captured
00:06So much attention in Ireland and needs to be so close to the hearts of so many people there
00:10What is it about this issue? I mean, I think there's a there's a couple of reasons
00:15I think one is that
00:18Irish people
00:20pay attention to what's happening in the world and I've tended to as a
00:25Country that was previously colonized themselves tend to have a sort of emotional and
00:32instinctive
00:33Connection with other peoples around the world who have had a similar
00:39experience and as well as that I suppose
00:43You know there were links between the Republican movement here Sinn Féin and the IRA and the IRA is no longer
00:51Around in any meaningful sense, but Sinn Féin is one of the main political parties here, and they would have had links with the PLO and
01:00and other Palestinian organizations going back a long time, and they would have all seen themselves I suppose as
01:06You know sort of movements for national liberation
01:10Sinn Féin and the IRA also had very strong links with
01:15militants in the Basque country
