Many families can’t afford holidays during the official school breaks, but parents who take their children out in term time face fines. Should the system change, or is it necessary to protect education?

00:00Kids need the education, but you've got to take into account the family circumstances as well.
00:05I'm an ex-teacher, and I believe I understand how important education is,
00:12but my grandchildren have on occasions been off on a holiday
00:17because it was the only time their parents could get free,
00:22because if you go only during the holidays it's very expensive and a lot of people can't afford it,
00:27and because what they were doing was pretty educational,
00:30they came back, they learned a lot, they'd spoken a bit of French,
00:33you know, it was a real eye-opener for them.
00:36So if I'd been their head, I'd have said, as their head did,
00:41go on, we won't...
00:44OK, and because they knew they'd work hard when they came back,
00:49so I think a bit of flexibility is needed there.
00:52Sounds like good to me. Nothing sounds like good to me.
00:56So we should do something different as a society.
