El Salvador offers to accept deportees and US nationals in outsourcing of US prison system

President Bukele said his country will accept convicted criminals of all nationalities, including US citizens, into its prison system for a fee.

00:14He's also offered to do the same for dangerous criminals currently in custody and serving

00:18their sentence in the United States, even though they're U.S. citizens or legal residents,

00:23U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday.

00:27The president, in an act of extraordinary friendship to our country, knowing the challenges

00:33we face in the U.S., has agreed to the most unprecedented and extraordinary migratory

00:40agreement anywhere in the world.

00:45Human rights activists have warned that El Salvador lacks a consistent policy for the

00:49treatment of asylum seekers and refugees, and that such an agreement might not be limited

00:54to violent criminals.

00:57Furthermore, the U.S. government cannot deport American citizens, and such a move would be

01:01met with significant legal challenges.

01:05Also on Monday, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth visited the U.S.-Mexico border.
