Six Nations debrief after Scotland's 31-19 win over Italy at Murrayfield

00:00Hello it's Graeme Bean from the Scotsman at Murrayfield where Scotland have just

00:05beaten Italy by 31 points to 19 to open their Guinness Six Nations campaign in

00:14winning fashion. It was a bonus point win, five tries scored including a hat-trick by

00:20Hugh Jones the centre. Scotland started really brightly, they were 14 and up

00:27after eight and a half minutes but they got pegged back by Italy in the second half and it

00:31was 19 all at one point but they pulled away with two tries and four minutes by Jones in the second

00:37half to eventually win with a little bit to spare. So it was a bright start by Scotland,

00:43the first try was scored by their co-captain Rory Darge from close range and then Jones got the

00:49first of his treble shortly after, after good work by Doohan Vandermeer who impressed particularly

00:55in the first half. Tommaso Allen reduced Scotland's lead with two penalties that made it

01:0114-6 at the midpoint of the half and Scotland got a third try through Ben White

01:08after a great offload by Dave Cherry back in the test team for the first time since the

01:132023 World Cup. Tommaso Allen got his third penalty of the day to make it 19-9 at half time,

01:21he then got his fourth penalty early in the second half to reduce Scotland's lead to seven

01:26points. That lead was wiped out by a try from Juan Ignacio Brix after a mistake by Finn Russell,

01:35tried to play into a pass to Jones but was intercepted. Brix ran in an easy score from

01:40halfway. Tommaso Allen's conversion made it 19 all and Scotland were wobbling a little bit and the

01:47crowd were getting a little anxious but Townsend looked his bench but on fresh legs and Scotland

01:55scored two tries midpoint of the half both from Hugh Jones, the first one after a brilliant run

02:01by Darcy Graham, cut inside and ran halfway into the pitch before playing in Jones and then the

02:07final score of the game came after a good pass from the replacement Tom Jordan who found Jones,

02:14who still had a lot to do but managed to squeeze his way over and that made the final score

02:20Scotland 31, Italy 19. So a good opening weekend for the Scots, it's Ireland next at Murrayfield
