BOM: Heavy rainfall for North Tropical Queensland Coast.

00:00Sarah here from the Bureau with an update on the heavy rainfall that's set to continue

00:04for the north tropical Queensland coast.

00:07So we'll start off by looking at the radar imagery and so this is the rainfall from this

00:12morning through until now and we can just see that there's a trough that's lingering

00:16off the coast there but drawing in a very deep layer of moisture and rainfall in an

00:22onshore flow.

00:24Now in the 24 hours until 9am this morning, multiple locations received 200 plus millimetres

00:30of rain and since 9am further 50 millimetres.

00:35So let's see the data here.

00:38We have the trough that's lingering off the coast where we're expecting the heavier

00:42rainfall to start to contract to the south, south of about Innisfail before easing during

00:47Wednesday morning.

00:50We do have a severe weather warning for this heavy rainfall extending from just south

00:54of Cairns all the way down to Rollingstone including Ingham and Tully.

00:59Now six hourly rainfall totals of 130 to 180 millimetres are possible with 24 hour rainfall

01:06totals up to 300 millimetres also possible.

01:11Now with heavy rainfall like this impacts could include hazardous driving conditions

01:16with flooded roads and detours, stress on power and infrastructure and even damage to

01:22crops, garden and property.

01:26For that reason we do have a flood watch that has been issued within this blue area here

01:30for both minor to moderate flooding possible and then more specifically flood warnings

01:36within these green areas for the Tully and the Mulgrave catchments.

01:41As we move through to Thursday and towards the weekend we can see this low pressure system

01:46lingering off the coast and an increase in shower and storm activity across the tropical north.

01:52Now by Saturday this low pressure system here has a moderate chance of developing into a

01:57tropical cyclone while this low in the Gulf of Carpentaria also has a moderate chance

02:03of developing into a tropical cyclone from this Sunday.

02:07Now this is just one scenario and it is an evolving weather situation with high uncertainty

02:13with regards to exactly where or how these lows will develop.

02:18But what's important is that the communities throughout northern parts of Australia start

02:23to prepare now and that shower and storm activity is expected to increase and there may be a

02:29tropical cyclone.

02:32So if you live across northern parts of Australia now is the time to prepare and to stay up
