Sarah here from the Bureau with an update on the heavy rainfall that's set to continue
00:04
for the north tropical Queensland coast.
00:07
So we'll start off by looking at the radar imagery and so this is the rainfall from this
00:12
morning through until now and we can just see that there's a trough that's lingering
00:16
off the coast there but drawing in a very deep layer of moisture and rainfall in an
00:22
onshore flow.
00:24
Now in the 24 hours until 9am this morning, multiple locations received 200 plus millimetres
00:30
of rain and since 9am further 50 millimetres.
00:35
So let's see the data here.
00:38
We have the trough that's lingering off the coast where we're expecting the heavier
00:42
rainfall to start to contract to the south, south of about Innisfail before easing during
00:47
Wednesday morning.
00:50
We do have a severe weather warning for this heavy rainfall extending from just south
00:54
of Cairns all the way down to Rollingstone including Ingham and Tully.
00:59
Now six hourly rainfall totals of 130 to 180 millimetres are possible with 24 hour rainfall
01:06
totals up to 300 millimetres also possible.
01:11
Now with heavy rainfall like this impacts could include hazardous driving conditions
01:16
with flooded roads and detours, stress on power and infrastructure and even damage to
01:22
crops, garden and property.
01:26
For that reason we do have a flood watch that has been issued within this blue area here
01:30
for both minor to moderate flooding possible and then more specifically flood warnings
01:36
within these green areas for the Tully and the Mulgrave catchments.
01:41
As we move through to Thursday and towards the weekend we can see this low pressure system
01:46
lingering off the coast and an increase in shower and storm activity across the tropical north.
01:52
Now by Saturday this low pressure system here has a moderate chance of developing into a
01:57
tropical cyclone while this low in the Gulf of Carpentaria also has a moderate chance
02:03
of developing into a tropical cyclone from this Sunday.
02:07
Now this is just one scenario and it is an evolving weather situation with high uncertainty
02:13
with regards to exactly where or how these lows will develop.
02:18
But what's important is that the communities throughout northern parts of Australia start
02:23
to prepare now and that shower and storm activity is expected to increase and there may be a
02:29
tropical cyclone.
02:32
So if you live across northern parts of Australia now is the time to prepare and to stay up
02:38
to date with the latest forecasts and warnings via the Bureau website, app and social media
02:43
and as always, listen to the advice from your local emergency services.
