00:00We are joined live by the Philippine Sambo Team, President Paolo Tangkotian and Coach Ace Larida.
00:06Coach, thank you very much.
00:08And Sir Paolo, thank you very much for the time you've given us.
00:12I know you're busy and it's early.
00:16It's very early.
00:17Yes, they're very busy.
00:18They just came back from the PSA Awards last night.
00:22So, thank you very much for the time you've given us.
00:26So, let's start.
00:27Actually, let's continue our conversation earlier, Sir Paolo.
00:30You already mentioned the grassroots program that you have.
00:33Tell us again, what is this program of yours?
00:38How do you try to expand the Sambo sport here in the Philippines?
00:44First of all, I would like to say good morning to all our viewers.
00:48And may God bless you all.
00:51Thank you for having us today.
00:54Our grassroots program is for our athletes from the province.
01:00Actually, we started in Davao last December.
01:05We train a lot of kids from public schools.
01:10And actually, we already have products from Davao City,
01:15which is now a national team.
01:18So, we give these kids an opportunity to study here in the big universities in Manila.
01:27Because I know that Sambo is like a hybrid martial arts.
01:31They can do judo, they can do wrestling.
01:35So, that's why we're giving these kids an opportunity
01:40to not only fulfill their dreams, but also to represent our country.
01:47Speaking of opportunity for the kids,
01:52Sir Paolo, you mentioned earlier the schools that also have Sambo as a sport.
02:00You've mentioned earlier, like UST, Lasal, and Benil.
02:05Is that correct? What are those schools?
02:07Yes, these are our chapter club members.
02:12So, we already have them in the big schools, like UST.
02:17UST has been supporting us since before 2019 CIMS.
02:23And now, there will be a new opening tonight,
02:28Lasal, DLSU University.
02:32They started training yesterday.
02:35So, it's one of our training venues for our national team.
02:40And one day, we'll be able to discover their quads.
02:43Actually, we already have one athlete from UST.
02:46Nice. Speaking of discovery, Coach,
02:49I'll ask you, how big is this for us as head coaches here in Sambo?
02:56How big is this kind of grassroots?
02:59For sure, we'll find something here.
03:01Yes, especially in Mindanao.
03:03In Combat Sambo, there are a lot of people there.
03:05Because in Mindanao, there are a lot of people who are good at punching.
03:09Here, in school, in Lasal, in UST,
03:13you'll be able to discover good athletes.
03:16Just a follow-up, Coach,
03:18Sambo is not a very popular sport here in the Philippines.
03:24How do you educate, especially the kids,
03:27who want to try this sport?
03:30We have a pre-clinic in Singalong.
03:33Those who want to go there, we teach them the basics.
03:39It's easy for them to choose between Sport Sambo and Combat.
03:42But for most of them, the basics are Sport Sambo.
03:48Very interesting.
03:49Earlier, Coach mentioned that there are a lot of good athletes
03:53who are good at punching in Mindanao.
03:55Not just in Sambo, but in other sports as well.
03:57I remember on Facebook, someone said,
03:59do it in Mindanao.
04:01The people of Mindanao are really strong.
04:04But it's true.
04:07Not just in Sambo, but in other sports as well.
04:09The people of Mindanao are really good.
04:13Sir Paulo, I have a question for you.
04:15What are our preparations for this year?
04:18What are we going to expect from our sports fans,
04:20especially our Sambo fans, our Sambo athletes?
04:23What are we going to expect from our local competitions this year?
04:30Actually, we have a lot until April.
04:34We'll start in February.
04:37February 2, they have a competition in Japan.
04:41It's an international tournament.
04:44But luckily, Japan has a new policy
04:52that they need to apply for one month.
04:54We're lucky that we have two entries,
04:58Sydney and Chino.
05:00I think if Sydney has a category to play in,
05:03if not, she'll be the coach.
05:06Their tandem is good.
05:08They know each other.
05:10They have good dynamics.
05:12Sydney and Chino can coach.
05:16Their training is continuous in Japan.
05:19They're from Sensei Hedimasa.
05:23They train there.
05:27This is the preparation for the upcoming event
05:31in the Dutch Open.
05:34There's also one in the Dutch Open.
05:36There's also one in the US Open.
05:40This is good because this is the first time
05:42that America is hosting.
05:44And this is the point
05:48where PIAS recognizes
05:52our International Federation.
05:55Sir Paolo, aside from that,
05:59congratulations to you
06:01for being re-elected
06:03President of the Philippine Samba Federation.
06:05Sir, can you share with us
06:07the first order of business here,
06:11the first things we'll do as a president this year?
06:15Before that, sir,
06:17I'd like to thank all our chapter members
06:22all over the Philippines
06:25for giving me four years
06:27to serve as a president.
06:29This is non-stop.
06:31We'll have a massive grassroots program.
06:34First of all,
06:36I've already met our coaches
06:39and our new officers.
06:41That's our plan
06:43to really expand.
06:45We have three structures.
06:47We've already strengthened our national team.
06:51This grassroots program,
06:53plus the third one
06:55is the hosting
06:57of international competitions
06:59here in the Philippines.
07:01So we've already worked out
07:03that by October,
07:05we'll host
07:07the World Beach Sambo.
07:09That's interesting.
07:11This is because
07:13we can give
07:15our advantage here
07:17is that we can have
07:19all of our athletes.
07:22So there's no doubt
07:24that we have a bigger chance
07:26of winning.
07:28That's our dream
07:30to produce a world champion
07:32right here in the Philippines.
07:38Our coaches
07:40and our athletes
07:42are working hard
07:44in their research and training.
07:46So hopefully,
07:48if God permits,
07:50we'll have a world champion this year.
07:52That's great.
07:54Let's look back
07:56especially to our teammates
07:58who are not familiar
08:00with the sport of Sambo.
08:02What are the competitions
08:04and awards that we've received
08:06previously?
08:08You've participated in a lot of tournaments last year
08:10and you've won medals here.
08:12What are these awards?
08:14This is our biggest blessing
08:16because imagine
08:19it feels like
08:21it's only been 10 years
08:23since we've held a Sambo in the Philippines.
08:25We've achieved so many things
08:27that I can't even count.
08:29But this is
08:31the latest.
08:33In just one year,
08:35last 2024,
08:37that's why I'm pressuring you.
08:39In 2024,
08:41we've won 3 bronze medals
08:43in the World Championships.
08:45Wow!
08:47We've also won
08:492 rankings.
08:51Number 5
08:53is AC Yap.
08:55And Joe Marie Torres
08:57is number 7.
09:01Chino is
09:03number 23.
09:05We're almost there.
09:07Oh, Sidney is number 13.
09:11We're so lucky.
09:13Hopefully,
09:16we'll be here until 2025.
09:18With your guidance,
09:20we're positive.
09:22I think with the recognition
09:24and medals you've won before,
09:26that will continue to motivate
09:28the whole team to keep striving.
09:30You know, Chila,
09:32this is what I wish for.
09:34Let's do this for 10 years,
09:362025.
09:38Sambo started in 2015.
09:40In 2025, let's be world champions.
09:42Positive.
09:44Coach,
09:46for you,
09:48our goal,
09:50our President,
09:52Paolo Tancontiana,
09:54our goal this year
09:56is to be world champion.
09:58But for you,
10:00how far are we?
10:02Or how close
10:04is our chance to get it this year?
10:06It's close because we're
10:08ranked 18th
10:10in the Philippines
10:13and the whole world.
10:15As a team,
10:17we're ranked 18th in the world.
10:19We can do it.
10:21You're almost number 5.
10:23But Coach,
10:25speaking of world champions
10:27and our elite players,
10:29of course, they're not kids.
10:31Are there people
10:33who are replacing
10:35our new veterans?
10:39Yes, there are a lot of new
10:41veterans who joined the national team
10:43when they were 16 or 17.
10:45They're already strong.
10:47It's been 3 years.
10:49Sir Paolo,
10:51you said that Sambo has only been here
10:53in the Philippines for 10 years
10:55but our national team
10:57achieved a lot.
10:59We're already world champion
11:01levels.
11:03But for our teammates,
11:05how did you bring
11:07this sport here in the Philippines?
11:10Let's talk about it.
11:12It's a long story
11:14but in 2012,
11:18I worked in Singapore
11:20as a foreign coach.
11:22I taught there.
11:24Now, they have a study
11:26that 13-year-old
11:28boys and girls
11:30can compete
11:32and match up.
11:34I said,
11:36I'm a girl, Sydney.
11:38Let's try it.
11:40We played Sambo versus Judo.
11:42Luckily,
11:44we won.
11:46That's how I met Sambo.
11:50Before the Asian Games,
11:52Sambo joined the Asian Games
11:54in 2018.
11:56In 2015,
11:58they wanted
12:00to propagate
12:02in the Philippines.
12:04From Russia,
12:07they reached Davao.
12:09That's why officers from Davao.
12:11Now, I'm back.
12:13Before, I was in Davao.
12:15Now, I'm in Manila.
12:17I'm on vacation in Davao
12:19because of Sambo.
12:21I've seen your videos
12:23and snippets.
12:25Sambo is very similar to Judo.
12:27There's grappling and takedown.
12:29I was excited because
12:31when we shot before,
12:33I had a segment in my first season
12:35where they taught me takedowns
12:37and techniques.
12:39I really enjoyed it.
12:43That was my interview
12:45in our segment.
12:47We were in full gear.
12:49Very interesting.
12:51That's me.
12:55It's a sport
12:57that I believe I can enjoy
12:59especially here in the Philippines.
13:01It's a lifestyle.
13:04I hope you continue
13:06to have good ensayos.
13:08This is an interpretation
13:10by the Russians
13:12of their MMA.
13:14It's very safe.
13:16Before you go to a professional fight,
13:18it's good to study Sambo.
13:20Sir mentioned earlier
13:22that before he brought Sambo to the Philippines,
13:24your son tried it.
13:26It's a sport of being
13:28for men only
13:30or for women only.
13:32That story is inspiring.
13:34It's a beautiful story.
13:36That's where it all started.
13:38They came here.
13:40This NSA
13:42is the only NSA
13:44from Mindanao.
13:46Our office is in Mindanao.
13:48I'm back here
13:50in Manila.
13:52We arranged
13:54with our
13:56coaches.
13:58We made our team stronger.
14:01Now, we're honoring
14:03for the grassroots program
14:05so we can increase.
14:07It's about time, right?
14:09Sir and coach,
14:11so we can get to know this sport
14:13and we can discover
14:15other athletes
14:17who will follow your footsteps
14:19and Sidney's,
14:21especially for female athletes.
14:25Thank you very much,
14:27Mr. Paulo Tangotian.
14:29Thank you for your time.
14:31We'll be with you.
14:33Do you have any message
14:35or invite to everyone
14:37who wants to try this sport?
14:39You can send a message.
14:41For those
14:43who love MMA
14:45and want to have
14:47a professional fight,
14:49it's a good start
14:55to train Sambo
14:58so you can have a professional fight.
15:00That's all.
15:02Exercise every day,
15:04discipline,
15:06that's what martial arts is.
15:10God bless us all.
15:12Thank you for inviting us.
15:14Thank you very much for inviting us.
15:18Everyone who wants to join Sambo,
