Kyiv says it can supply Moldova with coal as gas transit agreement with Russia ends

Zelenskyy said last year he had no intention of renewing the gas transit deal, stressing the importance for Europe of moving on from Russia and not allowing the Kremlin to ‘earn additional billions’ on Ukrainian blood.

00:14His comments come after natural gas from Russia to Europe via Ukraine ended on 1st January

00:19after Kyiv refused to renew a transit agreement.

00:23Moldova's pro-Russia breakaway territory of Transnistria has been particularly hard hit

00:28by that decision.

00:29It was heavily dependent on Russian gas and when that supply ended so too did most industrial

00:35activity.

00:36Authorities in the region declared a state of emergency and implemented power cuts of

00:40up to eight hours a day.

00:43Russia says it shut off the gas to Moldova because of an alleged 688 million euro debt

00:48for past supplies, an allegation that the Moldovan government has fiercely denied.

00:54Sandu accused Russia of a calculated strategy to create social and economic chaos.
