Moldova accuses Russia of provoking crisis in Transnistria

On the first day of the new year, Moscow halted gas supplies to Moldova's pro-Russian separatist territory. For Moldova's Prime Minister Dorin Recean, the Kremlin aims to destabilise the pro-European government in Chisinau.

00:08Since 1st of January, Transnistria, a separatist pro-Russian Moldovan territory, has no longer

00:13been receiving gas from Russia, which used to transit via Ukraine.

00:18The government in Kisnau has offered to help, but the gesture was rejected by the Transnistrian

00:23officials.

00:24The situation is now worrying for the inhabitants, as winter conditions are getting worse.

00:55with the aim of destabilizing the pro-European government a few months ahead of parliamentary

01:00elections scheduled for this autumn.

01:05According to Kisnau, Russia's interest is in being able to strengthen its military presence

01:09in Transnistria, since it has around 1,500 soldiers in the region bordering Ukraine.

01:16So this is what we want to achieve, for Russia to withdraw the troops and to allow Kisnau

01:23and to allow Moldova to administer properly the region and to provide the public services

01:32that people are requiring.

01:36The Russian energy company Gazprom's explanation to suspend deliveries is because Moldova is

01:41late with its payments.

01:44Kisnau disputes this and Brussels is watching the situation closely, as Moldova is a candidate

01:49country to the European Union.
