We have with us now in the studio, golfer Rian Maliksy.
00:04
Good morning, Rian, and welcome to PTV Sports. How are you this morning?
00:09
Good morning. Thank you for inviting me. I'm okay.
00:14
First off, can you tell us what was your journey in golf and what inspired you to take up this sport?
00:22
So I started when I was 8. My dad used to swing at home and I was just curious.
00:28
So they brought me to the range and then I started throwing.
00:32
And then I kept going. After a month, I started playing in tournaments.
00:37
And then a year after, I went abroad.
00:40
So that's where I started.
00:43
And I think golf brings out my individual spirit and I really have to be dependent on myself.
00:49
So that's why I like golf.
00:52
Parter, as you can see here, for some athletes, they are naturally born to be an athlete.
00:58
Just like what Rian told us.
01:00
The first time he entered the golf course, he already had a natural swing.
01:05
Right.
01:06
So this is natural to you? You felt right away that this is something that you're going to be good at?
01:13
Yes. When I started throwing the ball, we clicked right away.
01:18
So I told my dad that I really like this sport.
01:21
So this is my career.
01:24
It's a good thing that Rian is here because when I tried to swing, the ball was still there.
01:29
It's not for everybody, right, partner?
01:31
Not for me.
01:32
But Rian, when you were a kid, when you started playing golf,
01:37
aside from your dad, who were your other influences that really made you fall in love with golf?
01:45
Aside from, as you said, your first swing, you already know that you're in love with this sport.
01:51
Who were your other influences?
01:53
So aside from my dad, because we always watch golf shows or PGA Tour tournaments.
02:02
So I always watch Nelly Cordo and Tiger Woods.
02:05
And before that, Jason Dayden and Jordan Spieth.
02:08
So they were the ones who influenced me in golf.
02:11
Who was your idol when it comes to golf?
02:14
Tiger Woods.
02:15
Tiger Woods. That's what I was thinking earlier. Tiger Woods.
02:20
Okay, partner.
02:22
You recently joined the competition.
02:26
Can you tell us more about the Australian Masters of the Amateurs?
02:31
Yes. So two weeks ago, I was in Australia in Melbourne.
02:35
So far, I didn't have a caddy that week.
02:37
So it was a bit of a struggle since everyone else had a caddy.
02:40
But I was very familiar with the course since I played that last year.
02:44
So that was my only mindset that I have to deal with myself
02:50
and be really comfortable in handling the pressure all by myself.
02:55
And then I did struggle with my swing.
02:58
So that was really the struggle that week.
03:03
But aside from that, despite that it wasn't an A game, I still finished third.
03:10
Do you feel like after performing on such a big stage,
03:15
is it something that you gained experience and confidence boosters
03:21
heading into your next tournaments?
03:23
Yes. Well, since I've been playing golf for about 10 years now,
03:26
my experience has been accumulating.
03:28
And I just used those lessons to my upcoming tournaments
03:32
that will somehow help me become a better player.
03:36
Earlier, you mentioned about pressure.
03:38
You were pressured during the tournament.
03:40
But as an athlete, as a golfer, how do you handle pressure during the game?
03:45
For me, I like to keep things simple.
03:47
So drink lots of water, do a lot of meditation,
03:51
and somehow pray right before I start a round.
03:54
So I think that really helped me a lot in performing on my tournaments.
03:58
You know, partner, one common factor that I see
04:02
among the many athletes that we've interviewed,
04:07
meditation is one of the routines that they do before any competition,
04:12
I guess because it relaxes their mind and keeps them focused on the game.
04:17
So it just goes to show, partner, that professional sports,
04:21
and even at the amateur level like Rian,
04:24
the mental game is really important as much as the physical.
04:30
Yeah, that's true.
04:31
Now, can you talk us about, walk us through your journey
04:35
to your very rare award that you won here at the US Sports Association.
04:44
Two major events that you won here.
04:48
So yeah, I came from a 2023 slump.
04:50
I was always in the medallions.
04:53
So I was very frustrated.
04:54
And then, ever since the start of 2024,
04:57
I've been focusing on training.
05:00
I remember before, I always had a nosebleed.
05:03
It's a good way to train.
05:05
So that's how hard I train.
05:11
Ever since playing tournaments,
05:13
where I was top 10,
05:14
and then when I came back to the Philippines at one point,
05:17
before those two events,
05:20
my dad told me,
05:21
let's just practice,
05:22
and then let's just do a wide set,
05:24
that you just need to be aggressive in the game.
05:27
And then I brought that with me,
05:29
in those two tournaments,
05:30
and then I won.
05:32
Rian, you said you had a nosebleed during practice.
05:35
Was it because of the heat?
05:37
It was because of the heat and the training.
05:41
We can see that our teammates there
05:46
don't put golf above the list of physically demanding sports.
05:52
But Rian is proving that it's really hard.
05:56
There's no such thing as an easy sport.
05:58
And of course, I'm sure every day,
06:00
you're training under the sun, right?
06:03
It's really hard.
06:05
And Rian, you also mentioned that in 2023,
06:07
it was a slump year for you.
06:09
So in 2024, you flipped the switch.
06:12
So how exactly did you do that?
06:13
What changed for you to turn that situation around?
06:17
So we just talked to my dad,
06:19
we just switched our mindsets,
06:22
I just switched my perception of things.
06:26
Because in 2023,
06:28
I leaned towards the negative side of my performance.
06:32
And then in 2024,
06:34
I tried to use those failures as an advantage for me.
06:38
Because there are really blessings in disguise.
06:40
And those are really the key moments
06:42
that I should use to really grow as a player.
06:46
You talked about your conversation with your dad
06:51
as something that really helped you overcome this slump.
06:57
And it seems like your father has a huge influence on you.
07:01
He seems to be your mentor and your guide.
07:04
Can you just talk about your relationship,
07:07
how special it is to you with your father?
07:10
For me, both of my parents are really good support system for me in my career.
07:15
So not only my dad, but also my mom.
07:17
They are really good partners.
07:20
And they have really helped me in my career.
07:22
So for my mom, she just executes the plan.
07:26
The plan my dad makes for me.
07:28
And then my dad is just there guiding me in the golf course.
07:32
And then I'm just very lucky to have parents like this.
07:35
Because not everyone gets to have the support system I have.
07:38
Very supportive.
07:40
Even if it's an individual sport,
07:42
golf is a team effort.
07:45
And it's a family team effort.
07:47
In Rian's case.
07:49
Do they also play golf?
07:51
Just my dad.
07:53
Mom is in charge of the strategy.
07:55
She's with us in the studio.
07:58
Mom is the strategic brains behind the team.
08:02
Mom reads a lot of golf strategies.
08:08
My dad does the planning.
08:10
And my mom does the execution of those plans.
08:15
Partner, in January 2024,
08:18
Rian ranks 60th in Amateur Golf Now.
08:22
It's only been a month,
08:24
and he's already ranked 3rd.
08:26
So can you tell us,
08:28
why did he leap from rank 60 to rank 3rd so fast?
08:34
In just, what, a year?
08:37
So I'll credit that to my dad.
08:39
Because as I said, he plans my itinerary.
08:43
And I was able to play on a lot of very good events.
08:46
That will help me boost up my ranking.
08:49
And since I really played well on those events,
08:51
that helped me really boost up that quick.
08:57
Rian, now let's talk about your future moving forward.
09:01
And we know that you received a scholarship
09:03
from Duke University,
09:05
a very prestigious university in the United States.
09:08
And you talked about having visited the school earlier.
09:12
So can you just talk to us about your experience
09:15
when you visited the campus?
09:17
So yes, since 2021, actually,
09:19
the head coaches of Duke University
09:21
have been watching me since then.
09:23
And then I was able to communicate with them
09:26
around summer of 2023,
09:28
since those are the NCAA rules.
09:31
And then I was able to visit that time.
09:33
And then I really love the campus.
09:35
The coaches are really nice.
09:37
And then, thankfully, I know the girls on the team.
09:41
So I was really comfortable.
09:43
And then I felt right away that
09:45
this is the place I want to be.
09:47
This is the place where I want to grow,
09:49
not only as a person, but as a golfer as well.
09:51
Aren't you somehow afraid
09:53
that this coming September,
09:55
I think, right?
09:57
You're going to Duke University
09:59
as a scholar in golf.
10:02
Do you have some sort of fear
10:05
that you'll be independent
10:07
going there to study at the same time,
10:10
to train in golf?
10:11
I think at first, I was really afraid
10:13
because I'm alone.
10:15
But I think that's really the point
10:17
of going to college golf.
10:19
Learning to be independent
10:21
and really handle things with difficulty
10:24
and the pressures handling those,
10:26
it takes a lot of responsibility.
10:28
But that's the point of college golf,
10:30
really to grow not only as a player,
10:32
but as a person.
10:34
To add to that,
10:36
as a student, an athlete student,
10:38
how do you balance?
10:40
I'm sure many are curious
10:42
how do you balance academics and sports?
10:45
For me, I'm very lucky
10:47
since I've been homeschooled since 7th grade.
10:50
I think it would be much harder
10:52
for me to balance it out
10:53
if I were to go to a conventional school.
10:56
So I'm lucky that my parents
11:00
allowed me to homeschool,
11:01
so I have more time to practice.
11:03
And then I could just study
11:05
my modules every night.
11:07
It's easy to balance it out.
11:10
Is this the first time
11:12
you've attended a conventional school?
11:17
Probably in a while.
11:18
It's been 6 years
11:20
since I've been in a conventional school.
11:23
So it'll be pretty new to me,
11:25
but I'll somehow manage.
11:28
Yes, of course.
11:30
But since you play here
11:33
for Duke University
11:35
and NCAA tournaments,
11:38
do you feel some kind of responsibility
11:41
to represent well?
11:43
Because you're not the only one
11:45
who carries the name of the Philippines.
11:49
Is that a factor in your thoughts?
11:54
At first, yes.
11:55
But since I've been doing this
11:57
since I was 11 years old
11:59
representing my country,
12:00
this is no different.
12:02
I'll just be representing the school.
12:05
And if it's not an NCAA-sanctioned event,
12:08
I'll just be representing my flag.
12:10
It is a big deal,
12:12
but this is something I really love to do.
12:16
I'm very excited about the progress
12:18
that will be made here,
12:19
especially training abroad.
12:21
Because most of our athletes
12:23
who trained abroad
12:24
have really improved.
12:26
From fencing to mathematics
12:28
to university.
12:30
Right now, she became an Olympian.
12:33
And especially her partner,
12:35
like what you said earlier,
12:36
the one who beat Rian's ranking.
12:38
And if she's still going to compete
12:40
in the United States,
12:42
who knows where her ranking will end up.
12:46
Maybe it'll only improve next year.
12:48
So Rian, the Philippine Open is coming up
12:51
and you'll be competing here,
12:52
best of the best,
12:53
male and female golfers.
12:55
How are you preparing for this?
12:57
The Philippine Open starts on Thursday
12:59
and it's an Asian tour sanctioned event.
13:01
And only the men will be playing that.
13:04
I am very grateful
13:05
that I'm the only women amateur to be invited.
13:09
So, of course, there are a lot of supporters
13:12
and there are a lot of people
13:14
who will support this as well
13:16
because I'm just a girl
13:18
playing in a men's field.
13:19
So, mixed feelings about that.
13:22
But for this week,
13:23
I'll be just taking in this experience
13:26
and see how I perform
13:28
with the male athletes here.
13:30
But this is a good training ground.
13:32
Yes, partner.
13:33
It's like a training ground
13:36
where all of her opponents are men.
13:38
But how are you preparing for this one?
13:40
I mean, especially that
13:41
all of your opponents are male golfers.
13:45
Except for her.
13:46
Except for her.
13:48
Entering the lion's den.
13:50
Right?
13:51
So, yes, well,
13:52
I'm just doing the same training
13:53
as I did last summer.
13:54
I've been working out a lot
13:56
and then seeing my coaches time to time.
13:59
And then, same routine.
14:02
And then, see how I play in those four days.
14:06
But let's talk about the upcoming events,
14:09
especially international events.
14:13
We know that there are Southeast Asian Games
14:15
this December 2025 in Thailand.
14:19
What are the chances that you'll play
14:21
for the Philippine national team?
14:23
Probably very high.
14:24
But I haven't been contacted yet
14:26
by the governing body of the Philippines.
14:29
So, a bit of a gray area there as well.
14:33
So, I'm not sure yet.
14:34
Hopefully, they contact me soon.
14:36
Since I'll be going to Dukna this September.
14:39
But I think during that time,
14:41
since November, December,
14:42
we're off-season.
14:43
So, I'll be pretty much available.
14:46
The gray area that you're talking about, Rian,
14:48
is this schedule-wise?
14:51
Not really schedule-wise.
14:52
But because I haven't been contacted yet
14:54
by the governing body.
14:57
But, of course, all athletes dream
15:01
to make it to the Olympic stage.
15:05
What are your chances, in your opinion,
15:07
for the LA 2028 Olympics?
15:10
So, I'll be gauging my performance first
15:13
in the 2025 season.
15:15
And see if I have really the capability
15:19
to turn pro.
15:21
Because I really need a ranking
15:23
to make it to the Olympics.
15:26
Last time I checked,
15:27
I think I was third or fourth in the pro ranks.
15:30
Just a slot shy of qualifying for the Olympics.
15:35
But we'll see in two years' time.
15:37
If I'm really good enough to qualify,
15:41
then I'll play.
15:42
Oh, that's nice.
15:43
Something to look forward to.
15:45
But how many international competitions
15:47
do you need in order to qualify?
15:49
Well, it's not just amateur events.
15:52
I really need pro events
15:54
that are sanctioned by Rolex.
15:56
So, being able to play and perform
16:00
in those Rolex-sanctioned events
16:02
will help me somehow jump in the rankings
16:04
in the pro level.
16:07
Maybe at this point,
16:08
can we just ask you,
16:09
because it's just the beginning of the year,
16:11
what is your main goal for this year
16:14
in terms of your career?
16:17
So, yes, I really want to perform
16:19
in my major events.
16:20
I did win two major events last summer.
16:22
I've been accepted to a couple of
16:25
professional events in the States
16:27
and I think in a couple of
16:29
different countries as well.
16:31
So, really big events.
16:33
So, hopefully I'll make the cut
16:35
and really perform in those major events.
16:40
Now, let's talk about your 18th birthday.
16:43
I believe you've celebrated it
16:45
in a very compassionate way.
16:48
Can you tell us more about it?
16:49
So, I'm turning 18 on March 10th.
16:52
I'll just be flying back from Vietnam
16:55
because I'll be playing the Asia Pacific
16:57
a week before that.
16:58
And then we were planning to celebrate it
17:00
not only for myself,
17:01
but for the golfing community
17:04
in the Philippines.
17:05
So, on the 23rd of March,
17:07
I'll be hosting a golf tournament
17:10
that will help raise funds
17:13
for the junior golf
17:14
and somehow train them
17:17
to really help them become
17:20
better golfers.
17:21
That's very nice, Rian.
17:23
Even Rian herself,
17:24
she's a young golfer,
17:25
but she's already helping her golfers.
17:28
She already has a vision to help others,
17:30
especially junior golfers
17:33
or aspiring athletes like her.
17:36
So, finally, do you have a message
17:38
to your supporters
17:40
and to our viewers as well?
17:43
So, to all my supporters
17:44
and to my viewers,
17:45
thank you so much for your support.
17:47
And for the prayers,
17:49
I hope you'll continue to support us.
17:51
So, God bless you all.
17:55
And maybe, partner,
17:56
this is a good opportunity
17:57
since Rian hasn't contacted
17:59
our golf stakeholders yet.
18:01
If you're watching this,
18:03
reach out to them
18:04
because you don't want to fumble this one.
18:07
She's really a promising golfer
18:10
here in our country.
18:12
Without further ado,
18:13
thank you again for your time.
18:15
It's such an honor
18:16
that you're with us this morning.
