Severe thunderstorms are expected again today across northeastern parts of New South Wales
00:05
and are also possible across eastern parts of Queensland.
00:09
This follows a massive day of storms yesterday as a line of severe thunderstorms moved eastwards
00:16
across the country.
00:18
They brought damaging to destructive winds and heavy to intense rainfall, but looking
00:23
at the satellite imagery we can see it's now moving out into the Tasman Sea.
00:29
So today the focus of the severe thunderstorms will be about northeast New South Wales with
00:35
the risk extending all the way up into Bowen, Queensland.
00:40
Now these storms may bring heavy rainfall, damaging winds or large hail.
00:45
And with the heavy rainfall comes a risk of flash flooding that can create really hazardous
00:50
driving conditions causing road closures and detours while the damaging wind gusts can
00:55
bring down both trees, power lines and cause power outages.
01:01
So for the remainder of today we're expecting the showers and storms to start to contract
01:05
into northeastern parts of New South Wales as this low pressure system here develops
01:10
just off the coast.
01:12
The southerly winds are expected to strengthen and also develop these large waves and really
01:18
powerful swell and for that reason we do have a hazardous surf warning extending from the
01:23
mid-north coast all the way down into the Illawarra.
01:28
Now as we move into tomorrow, Friday, that low lingers and the strengthening winds will
01:33
start to push up into land areas while the onshore flow will intensify the rainfall areas.
01:40
And for that reason we have issued a severe weather warning for both damaging winds and
01:46
heavy rainfall extending from the mid-north coast all the way down into the Sydney metro area.
01:53
Now that low pressure system by Saturday will continue to linger on the coast before starting
01:58
to move away so both heavy rainfall and damaging winds are expected to continue until at least
02:05
the first half of the day before that low pressure system drags away the severe weather.
02:12
So how much rainfall are we talking?
02:14
Within that warning area there is the potential for six hourly rainfall totals between 70
02:19
and 120 mm while between now through until Sunday there is the potential for up to 150
02:27
mm to be accumulated, particularly about the elevated terrain.
02:32
And for that reason we have issued flood watch for the central, the Hunter and the mid-north
02:37
coast for isolated minor flooding possible from as early as this evening.
02:44
So if you or anyone you know lives within eastern parts of the country, it's really
02:49
important that they stay up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings via the Bureau
02:53
website, app and social media.
02:55
And as always, listen to the advice from your local emergency services.
02:59
Bye for now.
