This Underwater City Dates Back Thousands of Years and Is Even Equipped With Stone Roads!

Archeologists have just discovered the remains of a sunken, underwater city. It features stone roads and signs of civilization, but they say it was built thousands of years ago.

00:00This video was captured by divers with the University of Zadar, from the bottom of the

00:08Mediterranean, just off the Croatian coast.

00:10And this is what they say is an ancient road built some thousands of years ago.

00:15So how did it get on the bottom of the sea?

00:16Well, the now underwater road was found at a site believed to have once been an artificial

00:21man-made island.

00:22It was first discovered back in 2021 by University of Zadar archaeologists via aerial surveys

00:27of the coast.

00:28It now resides only 13 to 16 feet underwater.

00:31The road was built from giant slabs of stone, though it now needs to be dug out of thousands

00:35of years worth of sedimentary coverage.

00:38Experts say radiocarbon dating points to it being built by the ancient Stone Age Hvar

00:42peoples around 4900 BCE, meaning it was constructed nearly 7000 years ago.

00:48But this isn't the only one in the area.

00:49The same researchers have already discovered a similar site on the opposite side of the

00:53island, featuring another submerged city, which they say is nearly identical to this

00:59one.
