Jack Smith has resigned as special counsel overseeing criminal investigations into Donald Trump and left the Justice Department, a court filing confirmed. Smith’s departure follows the completion of his final report on two probes: Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his handling of classified documents after leaving the White House in 2021. Smith indicted Trump twice but dropped both cases after Trump's November election win, following DOJ policy against prosecuting sitting presidents.
