00:00West Lafayette, Indiana is the most densely populated city in the Hoosier State, with around 45,000 residents in the under-14-square-mile city.
00:15The city has received both pushback and praise for some of the ways they've addressed the housing shortage, as mid-rise luxury housing pops up all along the city's urban core.
00:24But the latest solution they're milling over? Accessory dwelling units.
00:28That means rental units like basement apartments and garage apartments added to pre-existing single-family homes.
00:42If approved, the added apartments would have to be between 400 and 750 square feet, cannot be used as short-term rentals like Airbnbs, and the main house must be owner-occupied.
00:58New Chauncey, with its historic charm and proximity to Purdue University, is one of the densest neighborhoods in West Lafayette.
01:09In a four-page letter to the council, the Preservation Commission voiced concerns that the new ordinance would move the neighborhood from dense to downright overcrowded.
