00:00South Korean authorities failed to carry out an arrest warrant for impeached
00:06President Yoon Suk-yol Friday.
00:08For several hours a dramatic standoff unfolded at Yoon's compound.
00:13Investigators led by the CIO
00:17or Corruption Investigation Office for high-ranking officials
00:20confronted members of the Presidential Security Service
00:23and soldiers who were seconded to them. By 1.30 p.m.
00:28the CIO called off the effort to arrest Yoon
00:31as it was concerned about the safety of its personnel. In a statement they said
00:35it was judged that it was virtually impossible to execute the arrest warrant
00:40due to the ongoing standoff and the office
00:44deeply regretted Yoon's attitude of non-compliance.
00:47Local media say the chief and vice chief of the Presidential Security Service
00:52are under investigation for obstruction of justice.
00:56Yoon has been under investigation for insurrection over his declaration of
01:00martial law last month.
01:02The current arrest warrant is valid until January 6th
01:06and gives investigators only 48 hours to hold Yoon
01:09after he is arrested. They must then decide whether to request a detention
01:13warrant
01:14or release him. Separate from the criminal investigation
01:18Yoon's impeachment case is currently before the Constitutional Court
01:21to decide whether to reinstate or permanently remove him.
