South Korea's opposition-led parliament impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday (Dec 14), voting to suspend him from his official duties over his short-lived attempt last week to impose martial law.

00:00South Korea's opposition-led parliament voted on Saturday to impeach President Yun
00:08Suk-yol, suspending him from official duties over his controversial attempt last week to
00:13impose martial law.
00:15Under the constitution, Prime Minister Han Deok-su, appointed by Yun, will serve as acting
00:21president.
00:22Yun becomes the second consecutive conservative leader to face impeachment, following Park
00:27Gyun-hee's removal from office in 2017.
00:31The motion passed with 204 votes in favor, 85 against, three abstentions, and eight invalid
00:37ballots.
00:38It cleared the two-thirds majority required in the 300-member National Assembly, with
00:43some members of Yun's People Power Party joining the opposition.
00:47Despite his suspension, Yun remains in office pending a decision by the constitutional court,
00:52which has six months to determine whether to remove him.
00:56If the court upholds the impeachment, a snap presidential election will be called.
01:01The crisis stems from Yun's decision on Dec. 3 to grant the military sweeping emergency
01:06powers, citing the need to confront anti-state forces and overcome political obstruction.
