00:00Good evening. The north wind is blowing, bringing snow and ice, particularly across parts of northern Britain.
00:07Heavy snow and strong winds bringing blizzards to parts of the Northern Isles through the evening
00:12and that wintry weather then slips its way down across the mainland of Scotland through the night.
00:17A further several centimetres of snow is possible.
00:20Further west, notice most of the showers here will be of rain, but still with temperatures around freezing
00:27and that could lead to some slippery conditions on roads and pavements.
00:31So we have a yellow ice warding in place down into parts of north-west England,
00:35across Northern Ireland and western Scotland and that mixture of snow and ice
00:39across northern and north-eastern parts of Scotland, again accompanied by those gusty winds
00:44making for blizzards and drifting of the snow.
00:47Back to the south, just staying dry, crystal clear, but cold.
00:51Minus 2, minus 3, even in urban areas in the countryside.
00:55Across the south we could get down to minus 5, minus 6, maybe even as low as minus 7.
01:00So a very frosty start across the south, a gusty wind blowing across northern Britain,
01:06still bringing in the showers in the morning, so still the potential for icy conditions on Friday morning
01:11across the north and the west and further snow showers coming in during the day
01:15across the north-east of Scotland.
01:17As we go through the day across the south, not a great deal of change.
01:20Gradually the frost should melt and we'll see plenty of sunshine across the midlands,
01:24south Wales, southern England.
01:26A few showers getting into north Wales, north-west England, again chiefly of rain,
01:30but a little bit of hail and sleet is possible and some snow over the hills
01:34as they'll be in western parts of Scotland.
01:37Temperatures here a little bit higher than to the east.
01:40We should get up to 4 or 5 on the west coast, whereas across the north-east
01:44we'll struggle to get much above freezing, certainly in Shetland staying below freezing.
01:48In the south, again 3, 4, 5 degrees Celsius, so below average,
01:52but the winds lighter here, quite a keen and chilly wind blowing once more
01:56along those North Sea coasts.
01:58During Friday evening, pretty quickly those temperatures will be back down below freezing.
02:02Still a few more showers coming in over northern England, perhaps into the midlands.
02:06Certainly they'll keep going in western Scotland, so again as temperatures drop
02:10that could lead to some icy conditions as we head into Saturday morning.
02:14But for a good chunk of the country, Saturday will again be dry and fine.
02:18Yes, we'll start at or below freezing in most locations,
02:22but quite a bit of hazy sunshine and offer across the south.
02:26Further north, still a few scattered showers, but not as many, I suspect,
02:30on Saturday as Friday, and certainly much of eastern Scotland, north-east England,
02:33staying dry and fine.
02:35But down to the south-west, things are changing.
02:38The wind's picking up, coming up from the south, so we'll see a spell of wet weather.
02:42Initially of rain, but it could turn to snow as we go through the course of the day.
02:48Again, a pretty chilly day.
02:50Later on, we could get up to 7, 8, 9 in the south-west,
02:52but for much of the day, most places only 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.
02:56But with lighter winds across Scotland, Saturday will feel milder.
02:59However, this wet weather in the south, as it hits the colder air,
03:03will produce some snowfall, something we need to keep a close eye on.
03:07There are yellow Met Office warnings in place for the weekend.
03:11This low-pressure system is responsible, bringing in the moisture
03:15and also eventually bringing in the milder air.
03:18But as this milder air, with that moisture, hits the colder air,
03:23that's already in place, we will see some rain initially,
03:26but then turning more to snow, particularly over the Midlands, Wales, northern England,
03:31and then into parts of Scotland.
03:33Freezing rain is also likely to be a problem,
03:36particularly across parts of Wales and the West Midlands.
03:39That could make things very, very slippery indeed.
03:42In the south, there will be gusty winds also,
03:45and as the winds pick up, as the ice balls squeeze together,
03:48that could cause some drifting of the snow coming into parts of eastern Scotland.
03:52So lots to consider into this weekend, Saturday night into Sunday in particular,
03:57as this low pressure moves in.
03:59Snow, freezing rain and ice across parts of England, Wales,
04:02and snow and strong winds moving into parts of Scotland.
04:05So Met Office warnings are in place.
