Oil spills in Russian-occupied Crimea are an 'ecological disaster'

After an oil spill from two Russian 'Volgoneft' tankers in the Kerch Strait, volunteers have been cleaning up the coastline in Moscow-occupied Crimea.

00:00Rescuers are cleaning up a contaminated beach in Moscow-occupied Crimean town of Kerch.

00:05This is the aftermath of an oil spill in the Black Sea as two Russian Volgonev tankers

00:09sank in the Kerch Strait on 15th of December where approximately 1,500 tons of fuel oil

00:15leaked from each tanker.

00:17The sailors were evacuated but one died from hypothermia.

00:21According to the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry, 7 kilometers of coastline in Temirg

00:26district have been cleared of oil and nearly 70,000 tons of contaminated sand and soil

00:31were collected and removed.

00:33Russian news outlets report that more than 10,000 people raced to help the cleaning efforts.

00:38It is believed that the tankers were seriously damaged following a storm in the Kerch Strait.
