Police praise for Melbourne New Year celebrants

Where police have praised the large crowds for overwhelmingly good behaviour. More than half a million people gathered in the city to watch the fireworks display.

00:00So police have said that people were generally pretty well behaved yesterday.

00:05They've praised the crowd for working well together and for working with emergency services

00:09as well.

00:10But there were a few incidents that they responded to.

00:12Police responded to 52 assaults last night, and 14 people were arrested for possessing

00:17weapons, including swords and imitation guns.

00:20And over on the Mornington Peninsula, a teenager was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening

00:24stab wounds.

00:25Two 16-year-olds were arrested in relation to that incident, but no charges were laid.

00:31Police also received more than 200 reports of firework-related incidents, and they're

00:35currently investigating three fires in Melbourne's north which they believe were sparked by fireworks.
