Updates on firecracker-related injuries and reminders on safety and well-being
00:05
this upcoming new year.
00:07
We will discuss this with Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo,
00:12
the spokesperson of the Department of Health.
00:14
Asic Albert, good afternoon.
00:18
Good afternoon, Asic Dale.
00:19
Good afternoon to all the viewers and listeners.
00:24
Asic, we would like to know how many of you have experienced
00:28
firecracker-related injuries so far?
00:32
Yes, Asic Dale, as of 6 a.m. this morning, December 27,
00:37
we have reported 101 fireworks-related injuries nationwide.
00:43
These data are from our central hospitals nationwide.
00:48
And if we look at each region in descending order,
00:53
the highest is Metro Manila, NCR.
00:56
Next is our Central Luzon Region 3,
01:00
followed by Cagayan Valley Region 2, top 3.
01:03
Top 4 is our Western Visayas Region 6.
01:07
And then top 5, we have two regions there,
01:11
our Ilocos Region 1 and our Central Visayas.
01:14
The most common firework-related injuries
01:19
are illegal fireworks.
01:21
Almost 8 out of every 10 fireworks injuries
01:25
are due to illegal fireworks,
01:27
particularly BOGA, Five Star, and Piccolo.
01:30
But Asic Dale, even the Quetis, has already been injured.
01:33
Even though it's legal, it's still one of the top 4
01:36
reasons for our firework injuries.
01:40
Asic, how many of these are the victims of actual fireworks
01:44
and how many were accidentally shot by firecrackers?
01:49
Let's put it at 6 out of every 10.
01:52
About 64% are said to be actively involved.
01:55
That's a good question, Asic Dale,
01:58
because most of the time, our countrymen think
02:02
that if they're not caught, they might not be hit.
02:05
The problem is, if the neighbor is nearby
02:08
and is using it, and they don't wish for community fireworks,
02:11
our neighbor might be affected.
02:14
That's why we're pointing out that the Quetis,
02:17
especially the Quetis, even though it's legal,
02:19
remember, it flies.
02:21
So if we accidentally use it, and we don't know how to use it,
02:23
or even if we know how to use it, and we hit it right,
02:27
and there's still a problem, a mistake,
02:29
it might end up in the neighbor's house.
02:32
Asic Albert, aside from the firecrackers,
02:36
does the loud sound of fireworks have an effect on a person,
02:41
especially on children?
02:42
And what are the other common injuries
02:46
that are caused by the use of fireworks?
02:51
Yes, Asic Dale.
02:52
Fireworks, if it's too close or too loud to our ears,
02:58
it can cause temporary hearing loss.
03:01
But maybe I should also mention, Asic Dale,
03:03
the parts of the body that are affected
03:06
by the injuries we've mentioned.
03:08
In our list of 101 injuries,
03:10
the most common injury is the eyes.
03:13
Our eyes, followed by the hands,
03:16
then the head, then the legs,
03:19
and then our arms.
03:21
I should also mention, Asic Dale,
03:23
that in our list,
03:24
out of the 5,
03:26
because we're now at 101,
03:28
out of the 5%, there was an amputation,
03:31
or the part of the body that was cut off
03:33
because of the fireworks.
03:37
Asic, what are the first aids that our countrymen can do
03:41
if they have an accident or if they were hit by firecrackers?
03:46
Yes, if we were hit by firecrackers,
03:50
if we have bleeding wounds,
03:54
we should use a clean cloth
03:56
and apply a little pressure.
03:58
We should press it a little
04:00
so that it won't get cut.
04:02
Now, if there are no cuts,
04:04
we can start cleaning.
04:06
But we should call for help
04:08
and we should be ready to go to the hospital.
04:10
We should clean the wound
04:12
using clean running water
04:15
to remove the dirt around it
04:17
and we should immediately go to the hospital.
04:20
If there is a patient who is eating,
04:22
if there is a part of the body that came off
04:24
and fell around,
04:25
get it and put it in a clean plastic bag.
04:28
Wrap it in plastic cellophane,
04:31
wrap it in a thin towel,
04:33
and then put it in ice.
04:34
Don't put the part of the body that was cut directly in ice
04:38
so that it won't have a problem.
04:40
It's important that no matter how big
04:42
or how small the wound is,
04:45
we should go to the hospital
04:47
if we need a tetanus shot in Asicdale
04:50
because it can have tetanus.
04:54
Asic, we have a question from
04:56
Crizel Insigne of IBC 13.
04:58
Is the DOH also inspecting
05:01
the places that sell popotok?
05:06
Asicdale, the mandate of the DOH
05:08
is for our health facilities.
05:10
We entrust that duty
05:13
to our related agencies
05:15
and we thank DTI and PNP
05:17
for their continuous monitoring.
05:20
Asic, we have another question from Crizel.
05:23
How many cases of holiday heart syndrome
05:26
were recorded two days after Christmas?
05:31
Asicdale, for our clarification,
05:33
holiday heart syndrome is very specific
05:36
if we drink too much alcohol
05:39
and we have arrhythmia.
05:41
It's good to monitor
05:44
acute complications of non-communicable disease.
05:48
In short, we have three diseases
05:50
that we monitor.
05:51
Our stroke,
05:54
heart attack or acute coronary syndrome,
05:57
and bronchial asthma in acute exacerbation,
06:00
HIKA in Tagalog.
06:02
In our latest report,
06:04
we recorded from December 21
06:07
to December 26 or 6 a.m.
06:09
of December 27.
06:11
We have 71 cases of acute stroke
06:15
from our Sentinel Hospitals.
06:17
41 cases of acute coronary syndrome
06:21
and 46 cases of HIKA.
06:23
Asicdale, it's good to highlight
06:26
the run because
06:27
this is the first time
06:29
that we monitor popotok
06:31
and popotok of roots
06:33
that don't want to happen.
06:34
That's why we should be careful.
06:36
Let's look at the data.
06:37
The number of people
06:39
with stroke and heart attack is increasing
06:41
towards the eve of Christmas
06:43
and then it dropped.
06:44
Now, we can see that
06:46
of course, when midnight approaches,
06:48
the parties are increasing again.
06:49
Let's not binge eat.
06:51
Let's not eat too much
06:54
and drink too much
06:55
or binge drink.
06:57
Because those can be the reasons
06:58
for us to have problems
07:00
with stroke and heart attack.
07:02
Doc, a question from Mia Alonso
07:05
of UNTV.
07:06
How ready are the hospitals
07:09
for possible firework
07:10
or firecracker-related incidents
07:12
this holiday?
07:15
Yes, Asicdale.
07:16
Before I say how ready,
07:17
let me remind you that
07:19
prevention is better than cure.
07:21
Let's avoid popotok.
07:22
But in my question,
07:23
we are ready.
07:24
Our hospitals are already code white.
07:26
It started on December 21
07:28
and it will reach January 6.
07:31
When we say code white,
07:32
let's not be afraid.
07:33
That means
07:34
there will be more instruments,
07:36
more washing,
07:37
medicines, anesthesia
07:38
so that if we need to cut
07:40
our fingers, feet, and hands,
07:42
let's not do it.
07:43
So, let's avoid popotok.
07:46
Doc, Mia Alonso's next question
07:48
is related to what you mentioned
07:49
about bronchial asthma.
07:51
Is the respiratory admission increasing now?
07:54
And if it's increasing,
07:55
what are the visible factors of it?
07:58
And if there are more data,
08:00
Asic Albert,
08:01
that can be added to the 40.
08:03
I hope you see 46 asthma-related illnesses.
08:09
Yes, Asic Dale.
08:10
Like what we mentioned,
08:12
we are on the baseline.
08:13
So, we can't predict
08:14
what will happen in the next year.
08:16
And of course, we can't predict
08:17
until we have data next year.
08:19
But if we look at the daily rate of popotok,
08:22
bronchial asthma is not increasing.
08:24
It's not increasing
08:26
compared to what we see every day.
08:28
Why?
08:28
Because we know that
08:29
the highest rate of popotok
08:32
is around December 31 of this year.
08:36
In our hope for the new year,
08:37
where there is smoke and fog,
08:40
if we are watching
08:41
and I hope our countrymen will be careful,
08:44
rather, our countrymen in Maykanlaon,
08:46
we will have a mist like an ashfall
08:49
if we use a lot of popotok
08:51
and the powder is in the air.
08:53
So, those who have cough,
08:54
you should be careful.
08:56
In this time,
08:57
we are approaching the new year,
08:58
make sure,
08:59
especially our countrymen who have cough,
09:01
if you are using inhaler,
09:02
make sure that the inhaler has a content
09:05
because you might have cough
09:06
since you were attacked.
09:07
So, check if it's working and has a content.
09:10
Doc Albert,
09:11
since the new year is approaching,
09:14
what are the steps that the DOH is doing
09:18
to lower the number of victims
09:20
of popotok during the holiday season?
09:24
The biggest prevention,
09:25
ASIC-DALE,
09:26
is to our countrymen,
09:28
to the PNP,
09:29
to our local government units
09:31
that will organize community fireworks
09:34
and to our other members of our community.
09:37
To remind,
09:38
we, as parents,
09:40
should remind our countrymen
09:42
and ourselves
09:44
that our children
09:45
should not touch popotok.
09:47
According to our data,
09:49
from 5 to 14 years old,
09:51
boys are the victims of popotok.
09:55
Why?
09:56
They should not touch popotok.
09:57
Mother, father, grandfather, grandmother,
09:59
brother and sister,
10:00
please take care of your children.
10:02
And as a good example,
10:04
let's not use popotok,
10:05
let's just have community fireworks.
10:08
ASIC, what are the recommendations
10:10
of the DOH
10:11
for the safety of families
10:12
during the new year,
10:13
especially in choosing
10:15
and disciplining the food?
10:18
Yes.
10:19
Actually, it's the same.
10:20
Our reminder for Ligtas Christmas,
10:22
it should be TED.
10:24
That's the name of our secret.
10:26
Proper food.
10:27
First of all,
10:28
we should avoid
10:30
foods that are too sweet,
10:31
fat and salty.
10:33
Follow the Filipino diet.
10:35
Half of our diet
10:36
should be fresh vegetables and fruits.
10:38
Just one-fourth of our carbohydrates,
10:41
rice and pancit.
10:43
Then, just one-fourth of our meat
10:45
and the fat foods.
10:47
In the letter E,
10:48
in the word TED,
10:49
exercise.
10:50
It's good to walk,
10:52
to exercise.
10:53
You don't have to go to the gym right away
10:54
and exercise excessively.
10:56
Even the physical activity
10:57
of walking
10:58
is a big help
10:59
to reduce the risk
11:02
of having a heart attack.
11:04
They say to move
11:05
so that it won't burn.
11:07
And letter D,
11:08
discipline of the body.
11:09
Let's not drink,
11:10
especially if we drive.
11:12
Asic Dale.
11:13
Another thing we monitor
11:14
is road traffic injuries.
11:16
And we have recorded
11:17
road traffic injuries
11:18
of 284
11:21
since December 21.
11:23
You know this,
11:23
we don't call it an accident
11:25
because it's avoidable
11:26
especially
11:28
we don't drink
11:29
if we drive
11:30
no matter how close it is.
11:31
Even if it's four wheels
11:33
or two wheels.
11:35
Thank you very much
11:36
for your time.
11:36
And for your reminders,
11:37
Assistant Secretary
11:38
Albert Domingo,
11:40
the spokesperson
11:41
of the Department of Health.
11:43
Thank you and
11:44
Happy New Year!
