Thousands of Europeans welcomed Christmas with great enthusiasm. Masses were organised all over the continent with thousands of worshippers attending the events to mark the festive occasion.

00:06The head of the Catholic Church held the annual Vatican Christmas Eve Mass at St. Peter's Basilica.

00:12This year, Francis inaugurated the New Jubilee, an event held once every 25 years

00:18which offers the Catholic faithful an opportunity to reflect and repent.

00:22This year's Jubilee was dedicated to the theme of hope,

00:26and the pontiff called on all Catholics to restore hope to the world.

00:31Elsewhere in Europe, the Notre Dame Cathedral reopened earlier this month

00:35was host to Paris' main midnight mass.

00:38The cathedral went up in flames in 2019 and was closed to visitors and worshippers for five years.

00:44Parisians and the world alike were emotional to see the religious occasion

00:48once again return to the French capital's iconic monument.

00:53And over in Greece, Athenians marked the occasion in their own unique way.

00:58Thousands of residents and tourists released their Christmas wishes on paper lanterns.
