00:00At least 100 Singaporean house buyers are locked in a legal dispute with a Malaysian
00:06developer over property ownership in Johor, CNA reported.
00:12The news portal said the buyers have accused the developer of not being transparent about
00:16the terms and conditions of the sale.
00:20It said legal experts are advising potential buyers to thoroughly review contracts and
00:25work with local agents familiar with Johor's real estate market.
00:29CNA reported that this surge in interest from Singaporeans has contributed to a 30% increase
00:35in condominium prices in Johor Bahru in just the first quarter of the year.
00:41Around 170 affected buyers have formed a WhatsApp group to collectively address their grievances,
00:48having purchased the properties for weekend use and as investments, with some spending
00:52up to $275,000 Singapore dollars.
00:56However, they were surprised to learn that their ownership was under a private lease
01:00scheme which essentially grants them a 99-year lease rather than actual ownership, limiting
01:06their rights significantly.
01:09The developers maintain that the PLS is legally binding and that the window for legal challenges
01:14by the buyers has expired.
