QPS Deputy Commissioner warns: 'if it's flooded, forget it'

Queensland Police Service Deputy Commissioner and State Disaster Coordinator Shane Chelepy urges the public to stay out of floodwaters.

00:04at risk and the lives of emergency services workers at risk by driving through our floodwaters.

00:10Over the last few weeks, we're only early in the season and we've already seen risky behaviour

00:15being undertaken with people driving through floodwaters. The Queensland Fire and Rescue

00:20Service, the SES, the Rural Fire Service, the Queensland Ambulance Service have already had

00:25to rescue many people from floodwaters from the west of the state to the southeast corner and

00:30the north of the state. So please, I implore you, particularly leading into Christmas,

00:35please do not drive through floodwaters. It's not worth it. Don't put your life at risk.

00:39I know it's school holidays. I know the kids are home, but can we please remind our children not

00:44to play in floodwaters? Only this week, we saw a young 15-year-old boy in far north

00:49Queensland get sucked down one of our drains. We were lucky on that occasion that that boy

00:54came out with some scratches and bruises, but we do not want to see bad outcomes from kids

00:59playing in floodwaters. So mums and dads, can I implore on you, have a conversation with the kids.

01:04Tell them how dangerous it is. You just do not know what's under that water.

01:08If you stay out of our floodwaters, we'll be safe this year and we can have a great Christmas.
