00:00A lawyer is now pointing out to the Department of Education the challenges that the education sector is facing.
00:06Jerome Teletoledo of Radyo Pilipinas has news for the country.
00:13The education sector is still facing challenges.
00:16That's what the House Committee on Basic Education and Culture,
00:20Chairperson Representative Roman Robolo,
00:23from the Panayanmang Radyo Pilipinas World Service.
00:26These are the lack of classrooms,
00:28multiple shifting schedules,
00:30and internet connectivity.
00:33The Bicameral Conference Committee
00:35noted that the Department of Education spent almost Php 12 billion.
00:41According to the congressman,
00:42the money spent should have been used
00:44to buy computers and gadgets.
00:47Although technology is part of the country's education system,
00:51it is not yet perfect.
00:53Technology is good. Technology will help them.
00:55But the problem is really, we have not yet perfected that system.
00:58I think at this point in time, it is still in its infancy.
01:02The congressman has already pointed out to the Department of Education
01:04the schools in the country that have multiple shifting schedules.
01:08They should have a school mapping of all the schools
01:11which are already experiencing three shifts, two shifts.
01:14Schools that are usually in the path of all these typhoons.
01:19Schools with damaged, still damaged classrooms until today.
01:23That is the first school map that they should come out.
01:26Congressman Romulo believes that the classroom shortage
01:30will be reduced next year
01:31so that the transition to a new type of education can begin.
01:35I think we can start now migrating towards
01:38using some of the funds for a more aggressive purchase
01:41or use of technology.
01:43By the time that happens,
01:44assuming that will happen in the next budget cycle,
01:47I think the Department of Education should do school mapping
01:50so that they can really lay it down in detail what they need,
01:54how they will implement it,
01:55so that we all are on the same page.
01:58This will immediately be felt by the students.
02:01In the latest data from DepEd,
02:03the classroom shortage in the country was recorded at P165,000.
