Putin signs security treaty with Belarus including possible use of nuclear weapons

The signing of the document during Putin’s visit to Minsk follows the publication of a revised version of Russia's nuclear doctrine which for the first time placed Belarus under the Russian nuclear umbrella.

00:20Speaking alongside Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin said he was sure the treaty

00:25would ensure the security of Russia and Belarus.

00:29Lukashenko asked Putin to deploy more advanced weapons in Belarus, including the new Oreshnik

00:34ballistic missile that Russia used for the first time in Ukraine last month.

00:39Putin has hailed the Oreshnik missile's capability, saying that it's immune to interception by

00:44any existing air defense systems.

00:47Lukashenko, who's ruled Belarus for more than 30 years and relies on Russian subsidies and

00:52support, allowed Moscow to use his country's territory to launch the invasion of Ukraine.
