New plaque unveiled to celebrate the successes of Keely Hodgkinson

Children from Sacred Heart primary school who attended Leigh Neighbour’s holiday club this summer at the Turnpike Gallery have made some drawings of Keely Hodgkinson which are now immortalised in a plaque celebrating her achievements.

00:00Tell us a little bit about what we're doing here today.

00:02So we're standing in front of our Wall of Fame which is near the parish church in Leigh by Little

00:09Asda and some years ago it seemed to me worthwhile that people who had achieved things in the arts

00:18or sports or science or politics who were from Leigh or born in Leigh or lived in Leigh were

00:25worthy of being celebrated. There was one blue plaque on James Hilton's house in Leigh at the

00:33time and I thought there are lots of other people who've achieved things over the years, let's

00:39celebrate them by giving them their own plaque on a wall in Leigh and the wall that we're in

00:46front of now was empty for many years. We got permission to do a mural on it and what we've

00:53created are some metal plaques where children have researched in the archives, made drawings

01:01and we've transformed them into some rather beautiful memorable art pieces.

01:06And tell us about the latest edition.

01:08The latest edition hot off the press is Keeley Hodgkinson who obviously has won gold medal at

01:16the Olympics this summer and a shining star within the athletics world who trained at Leigh Harriers

01:24from a very young age, was going to be a swimmer at Howbridge Sports Centre but changed to running

01:33and as they say the rest the rest is history. So we've got Keeley Hodgkinson now as the 15th

01:40person to be added to our wall of fame.

01:44And tell us a little bit about the artwork that's actually on it, where it's come from.

01:48So the artwork has come from various photographs of Keeley and we did some workshops at the Turnpike

01:55Gallery in the summer where I got the children from Sacred Heart School holiday club to make

02:03drawings, to do observational drawings of Keeley at various stages of her career.

02:11These were then scanned, some colour was added, a digital file was made and then printed into this

02:21metal circle that is now on the wall.
