Should the Royal Mail stay in British hands?

With news that the Royal Mail looks set to be sold off to a Czech billionaire, we’re asking people in Cardiff whether they think it should stay in British hands, and maybe even back into British taxpayer ownership.

00:00For me it should be, especially with Labour taking over, they should nationalise everything.

00:08I think they should absorb everything back in, and that includes the Royal Mail, I think

00:12all of the energy, you know, everything. I think it would be like it was in the 80s.

00:21But it should really stay with us, shouldn't it? It should stay in Britain, not going out

00:27to other countries, definitely.

00:30I would hope that this government is looking very keenly at making sure it's not an unfolding

00:36disaster. We've had enough of those. Let's not have another one.

00:39There's a place for the private sector, right? But when you've got something like the Royal

00:42Mail, Energy Water, where there's a monopoly, there's no competition to drive prices down.

00:47And that's the situation the Royal Mail's in, you know. If I want to send a card to

00:52my mam, I'm putting that through the Royal Mail, and I've got to buy a stamp. And if

00:55there's no competition, they can charge whatever they want.
