The number of students registered as persons with disabilities (OKU) in Malaysia has reached almost 290,000 this year, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri at the launch of the national-level OKU Day in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday (Dec 3).

00:03Next, the KPWKM Agency.
00:06If we look at the latest statistics,
00:10there has been an increase in the number of registered OKU students
00:15for 2024 until 31 October.
00:20The number of registered OKU students is 289,161,
00:28which is 26,878 more people
00:33compared to the total number of registered OKU students in 2023,
00:39which is 262,283 people.
00:45In a positive way,
00:47it gives a good sign,
00:49which is more parents have the awareness to register their children
00:55as OKU students,
00:58and this will help to eliminate the stigma of OKU children.
01:03The KPWKM has also carried out various strategic collaborations
01:08with the university to develop the OKU Child Care Module
01:15so that the special needs of OKU children can be met
01:19to ensure that they are not excluded from the world of child care.
01:25Children who do not register as OKU
01:29will be left out of the various benefits
01:33provided by the government for them.
01:36I urge parents to throw away the shame
01:42or shame to register their children as OKU.
01:46Let's eliminate the stigma of OKU together.
01:51You said there was an increase in the number of registered OKU students.
01:56Can you comment on that?
01:58Actually, from time to time,
02:00this is my second year,
02:02I see that we only report to people about OKU,
02:07but we don't talk about registered OKU.
02:10Because we want to make sure that many people know
02:13that there is still room for registration.
02:16I have been to a programme where many people do not register,
02:22but they do not need help because they are capable.
02:27But when I told them that they can get special benefits,
02:35they asked me what the benefits were.
02:37You can get a passport for free.
02:40You can get on public transport for free.
02:46So this is how we see the effectiveness of it.
02:51Alhamdulillah, we hope that it will continue.
02:54Whatever programme we have,
02:56we will bring our JKM counter everywhere.
03:01We have at least 1% of the population to work in the public sector.
03:06But right now, we still haven't achieved it.
03:09Maybe it's because there are buildings in this area
03:13that do not meet the needs of the OKU,
03:15so maybe that's why they don't take it.
03:18And we can see that the corporate sector has tax exemptions
03:22that also help.
03:23Like the government,
03:25they need to be aware of giving jobs to the OKU
03:30so that they can feel motivated for their lives.
03:35So that they can earn a living,
03:37so that they can be independent.
03:38This is important.
