00:00A business group has poured cold water over a proposal to standardize paid annual leave
00:07at 16 days a year for all workers, regardless of their length of employment.
00:12William Ng, president of the Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia, said
00:18such a ruling would be unfavorable to both employee and employer.
00:23He said this is because many companies already provide 18 to 21 days leave for those with
00:29more than five years of service.
00:31The Employment Act currently provides for eight days annual leave for employees who
00:36have served more than 12 months but less than two years, 12 days for employees with two
00:42to five years' service, and 16 days for those with more than five years' service.
00:48Ng said any forced increase in the amount of annual leave would lead to higher operational
00:53costs and further slashed profit margins.
00:58Last week, Pasir Putih MP Nick Zawawisale proposed a standard 16 days annual leave,
01:05saying a standard amount of leave would motivate staff to work more efficiently.
