Kanom Tokio is one of Thailand's most beloved street snacks.
00:03
Kanom means snack in Thai.
00:05
But did you know that this kind of treat can't be found in Japan?
00:08
It is believed that Kanom Tokio first appeared around 1967
00:13
sold at the Thai Daimaru department store, a Japanese-owned mall in Bangkok.
00:18
The snack was named Tokio to match the store's Japanese theme.
00:22
Some say it was inspired by dorayaki, the pancake loved by Doraemon,
00:27
or yatsuhashi, a cinnamon-flavored treat from Kyoto.
00:30
But the truth, no one knows for sure.
00:33
Unlike traditional Japanese sweets, Thai added their own twist,
00:37
swapping red bean filling for custard, eggs, sausages, or even pork floss and chili paste.
00:43
So, while it has Tokio in its name, it has no real connection to Japan's capital.
00:49
So, what is your favorite filling for Kanom Tokio?
