Way back in 1991, the United Nations began 16 days of activism for the prevention of
00:19
and to try and eliminate domestic violence against women.
00:23
And as we all know, unfortunately, it has become much more prevalent each time we pick
00:29
up our newspapers or we watch the news, we hear of women being hurt and killed in domestic
00:35
violence and by people they know.
00:38
Gladstone's a small, small rural town, and rural towns have as many problems as the city.
00:46
We're a pretty crafty CWA, and we thought, what can we do for activism?
00:52
And we thought, well, we'll hit it with handicraft.
00:56
We'll crochet, we'll knit, we'll make wooden flowers, and we will yarn bomb a tree so that
01:02
people will pass and go, what's that and why are they doing it?
01:06
And that's what we're hoping for.
01:08
Let's start a conversation.
01:10
Let's everyone say, no, it's not okay.
01:14
It isn't okay to hurt a woman.
01:16
It isn't okay to use violence against a woman.
01:19
Let's start a conversation.
01:20
Let's make our kids say, that's not something I want to grow up to do.
01:25
And when I look around, we've yarn bombed the trees, and people are talking, and that's
01:29
all we can hope for.
01:31
Let's change behaviour through conversation.
01:42
Fabulous.
01:43
Absolutely fabulous.
01:44
I congratulate both Gladstone, South West Rocks and Kempsey for this initiative.
01:50
It's very important and for all women, not only here in this Mid North Coast area, but
01:58
all over Australia and the world.
02:00
And when you think that one in four women will experience domestic violence of some
02:09
description throughout their lifetime, I think we've got to start with the action of educating
02:17
our children, showing them respect, that it starts at home, and that we have to support
02:27
the women who are experiencing domestic violence.
02:31
And I think the girls here have done that by showing the amount of work that they've
02:37
done in knitting, crocheting, I can't do either, but it's one of those things that you just
02:46
admire women who get together, who put themselves out and support the women in their area.
