Liverpool 2-0 Real Madrid: Reds deliver dominant display

Will Rooney reports from Anfield as Liverpool earn a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League.

00:00Full-time here at Anfield and a European night that's been etched into the history books.

00:06Liverpool finally getting their revenge on Real Madrid.

00:10A 2-0 victory to continue their 100% record in this season's Champions League.

00:16A victory that was fully deserved by the Reds.

00:19They were the better team from the outset.

00:23Fully deserved, as I say.

00:25Alex McAllister and Cody Gaffall on target in the second half.

00:29Liverpool finally getting a bit of revenge from those two Champions League final defeats to Madrid in 2018 and 2022 respectively.

00:39I say Liverpool from the outset.

00:41They were on the front foot in the fourth minute.

00:43They had a big chance when Mo Salah pilfers Kylian Mbappe of the ball and launched a Liverpool attack.

00:50He gave it to Darwin Nunes and his angled effort was well saved by the Real Madrid keeper Thibaut Courtois.

00:57The Real Madrid defender nearly turned into his own net, Rayo Asensio, but luckily just on the line he managed to clear it.

01:05Liverpool created a few more chances.

01:07Darwin Nunes had another header from a real clever pass from Alexis McAllister that went just wide.

01:14Luis Diaz had a couple of opportunities.

01:17I can't really remember Real Madrid having a chance in the first half to be honest with you.

01:21They had a sort of moment when Virgil van Dijk's sloppy pass gave them a bit of an opportunity, but Andy Robertson defended really well.

01:31The first half they didn't create too much.

01:34They were the better team.

01:36Fought Courtois into a few saves, but Liverpool came out of the block second half really quickly.

01:43Conor Bradley was immense throughout the game.

01:46Had a header saved.

01:48Curtis Jones had an effort blocked just before that.

01:52Then Alexis McAllister broke the deadlock.

01:57Curtis Jones drove at the Real Madrid defence, gave it to McAllister.

02:01He played a 1-2 with Conor Bradley and applied the finish into the far corner.

02:07Anfield erupted as it really did because they were hoping that would come.

02:12They were wondering, is this going to be like the 2022 final?

02:15When they can't find the back of the net, Thibaut Courtois that night was immense.

02:19But finally the Belgian was beaten between the posts.

02:23McAllister actually had an opportunity not too long after that.

02:26Then there was a massive moment when Andy Robertson committed a foul on Lucas Vasquez.

02:33The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot.

02:36Kylian Mbappe stepped up.

02:39He's had a real difficult time since he joined Madrid from PSG in the summer.

02:43That continued because Joaquim Kelleher in the Liverpool goal,

02:46still deputising for Alisson, barely had anything to do all night.

02:51Guessed correctly, saved Mbappe's penalty to his left.

02:56Then about 10 minutes later it was Liverpool who actually had a penalty.

03:00Mo Salah being quiet for a lot of the game.

03:03He saw more of the ball in the second half.

03:06Finally he had a chance to really run up the Real Madrid defence.

03:09He really bamboozled, failed on Mendy.

03:12Went one way, went the other, tripped.

03:14It was definitely a penalty.

03:16Salah who stepped up.

03:18He sent Courtois the wrong way but he just couldn't find the target.

03:21He put his effort the wrong side of the post.

03:24You wonder, is Liverpool going to get punished here?

03:27Is Madrid going to have that little bit of momentum from that and finish strongly?

03:32But they didn't. It was Liverpool who stayed on top.

03:35Cody Garpo, the substitute, ensured there was no nervy finish.

03:39Andy Robertson's cross after his corner had come back out to him.

03:43Whipped in a real difficult ball to defend.

03:46And there was Garpo who got up, towered above the Real Madrid defence

03:49and powered ahead at home.

03:51From there, it was hoof to puff to be quite frank.

03:54They had one late chance that Kelleher saved.

03:57Liverpool fully deserved them.

03:59Top of the Champions League standings and top of the Premier League.

04:03Eight points clear and he welcomed Manchester City here on Sunday.

04:06The only disappointment from tonight was Ibuki Makanese limped off at full-time.

04:12He was receiving treatment.

04:14He looked in some discomfort when he was coming off the pitch.

04:18Conor Bradley also had to come off in the closing stages.

04:21Arnaud Slott at his press conference said that they're not sure on the extent of the injuries yet.

04:26They'll be checked over, I'm sure.

04:28But that will be a disappointment because Makanese has been excellent for Liverpool this season.

04:32To lose him would be a massive blow.

04:34But as Arnaud Slott said, people have got to come in and step up.

04:38But for tonight, Liverpool supporters go home and celebrate another big win.

04:44A big European night at Anfield.

04:46They finished Liverpool 2-0.
