Will Rooney reports from Wembley as Liverpool lose the Community Shield.
Transcript
00:00Full-time here outside Wembley and Liverpool suffering yet another defeat at the National Stadium.
00:07They lost here in March against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.
00:11And to raise the curtain on the 25-26 season, the Premier League title holders were beaten on penalties by Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.
00:19Now, it's not a game that Liverpool will be absolutely distraught about losing, but there are things that Liverpool need to work on.
00:28They are going to defend the Premier League title this season, the first time they've defended the title since 1984.
00:34That's the challenge that Liverpool have.
00:37And, yeah, there were good aspects of Liverpool's performance.
00:40There were also aspects that they need to improve.
00:42I mean, attacking-wise, they were really impressive.
00:44Free-flowing going forwards, the new signings were really good.
00:47But defensively, like they have done in pre-season, they look vulnerable.
00:53The Liverpool made a dream start, took the lead in the fourth minute.
00:55New signing, Hugo Eketike, and record signing, Florian Werth, combining.
01:01Vert slipped in Eketike, showed really good feet, and killed a shot in from the edge of the box into the far corner.
01:09Liverpool, 11 minutes later, they gave Palace a golden chance to equalize.
01:15Just before Alisson Becker had raced off his line to deny John-Philippo Mateta.
01:22But from the second phase of play, Werth, Manda Eketike were a really clumsy, sloppy challenge on Ismail Asar.
01:28It's definitely a penalty.
01:30Mateta stepped up and sent Alisson the wrong way.
01:33Liverpool regained a composure.
01:34He took the lead for him in Slater.
01:36Jeremy Spring-Ponga, Nova Davies, and signed from Bayer Leverkusen this summer for £29.5 million.
01:43He got forward.
01:44He stood up as man.
01:45He put a cross into the box, and the ball nestled into the far corner over Palace key for Dean Henderson.
01:52It was meant to be a cross.
01:54But sometimes fortune favours the brave, and it was a really good attack and play from Grim-Ponga.
01:59It was a really good game.
02:00And second half, Liverpool came out.
02:03Eketike should have gave Liverpool two-goal cushion within the first minute.
02:08Because Milos Kerk has another of the new boys put a cross into the box.
02:13Find Eketike.
02:14But he heads well wide from inside the six-yard box.
02:18He had to score, to be quite frank.
02:20He had another chance after that.
02:22Florian Vert put one over the bar.
02:26But Palace started to get on top.
02:29Every tier, he had a shot well saved by Alisson Becher.
02:34But the equal either came.
02:36It was that man Sarr again.
02:37Liverpool switched off defensively.
02:39Virgil van Dijk again at fault.
02:40It looked like he got caught ball watching.
02:43And there was Sarr who burst in and finished.
02:47Both sides had chances to win it.
02:48Mo Salah, who was really quiet throughout the encounter, was picked out at the far post.
02:54But his effort was easily saved by Dean Henderson.
02:56And then at the death, Palace pulled one just wide.
02:59And the game went to penalties.
03:00Then no extra time in the community shields.
03:03And it was Palace who won it 3-2.
03:05Mo Salah blazing over the bar.
03:07Again, like he did in that athletic Bilbao match earlier this week.
03:13In the pre-season friendly.
03:14He blazed over the bar.
03:15Alexis McAllister missing.
03:16And then also Harvey Elliott.
03:18Liverpool really poor at penalties.
03:21So some good aspects of the game.
03:23Some poor.
03:23Palace probably deserved it on the shade of things, to be honest.
03:29Just because Liverpool defensively, they gave them.
03:32But luckily had chances as well.
03:33But Alistair's now got to find a balance, he said, after the game between attack and defence.
03:39He said that they'd look better attack-wise so far.
03:43But had to come at the cost.
03:46They can see there's four against AC Milan in pre-season also.
03:50So some things for Arnestop to work on.
03:53Liverpool prepare to start their Premier League title defence on Friday night against DFC Bournemouth for Anfield.
04:00Finished there at Liverpool 2, Bristol Palace 2.
04:02But Palace win their 3-2 on penalties.
04:05And claiming the community shield for the first time in the club's history.
