"I'm just going to go out and literally just shred the f— out of my tires."

Filmmaker Jessey Dearing takes you to the Minneapolis takeover scene, where large crowds gather for car meet ups spinning and drifting their cars ... until the police show up.
Transcript
00:00Law enforcement, like politicians, they kind of look at it as like a crime.
00:08I've been arrested, my car has been impounded many times.
00:18I'm just going to go out and literally just shred the **** out of my tires.
00:28It's just like, I don't know, kind of just like a weight lifted off your shoulder.
00:36In cities across the country, car meetups have taken off since the beginning of the pandemic.
00:40Sometimes called sideshows or takeovers, a large crowd will block off an intersection or parking lot,
00:45spinning and drifting their cars until the police show up.
00:47Then they'll scatter and speed off to the next location.
00:50For Brute, I'm taking you to Minneapolis to meet up with Tyreek Jones and his crew, the Musty Boys,
00:55as they host meetups across the city.
01:11It is basically the meetup spot.
01:13Got the nice view of Minneapolis, Minnesota. That's downtown Minneapolis right there.
01:18Once I post a picture that I'm here, they're going to start coming.
01:22When y'all pull up, I want y'all to pull up. Spectator, pull up over there.
01:25But VIP, this is the section right here, OK? I need all my VIP on this side, OK?
01:36It's a lot of like organizing, like, you know, like where the places be at or like what time and this and that.
01:45At first, it was kind of like chill, easy. But after a while, it just got a little chaotic.
01:51Like people just started coming. New people just started coming and just started thinking like you can just grab,
01:56you know, say a flyer, for example, and just start sharing it.
02:00My outlook on the community is everybody's safety and everybody's well-being.
02:04I want everybody to have a good time.
02:06Hey, Ian the Hellcat just pulled up. You know it's a movie. Come on now. It's a movie, movie.
02:17My name's Elijah. Everybody also knows me as Ian the Hellcat.
02:21Right now we're in Minneapolis, Minnesota at our takeovers and we get it lit here.
02:25Hey, let me hop in the back. This thing's sweet, dog.
02:37Hey!
02:43When George Floyd passed away, that's when most of our city got burnt down.
02:48That's when the takeover scene really started to amp up here in Minneapolis.
02:52There's a lot of kids out here that battled with drug addictions and all other shit, you know what I'm saying?
02:57Like gang violence and stuff like that. And like this is their escape.
03:01This is where they go to, you know what I'm saying?
03:03Like a lot of people really tapped into the car community and they loved it.
03:21The city is vibrating right now, man. I swear to God, the city is vibrating.
03:27This first spot is going to be nice.
03:34Alright, so my operation, or not my operation, but my theory, I try to have like, you know what I'm saying,
03:39like VIP in this section and then everybody else just park wherever.
03:43So, just everybody on one side makes it easier, makes the job done really well.
03:50I'm finna show y'all, I'm finna show y'all what it's like to come to the Grand Refinery.
03:53Bro, I'm finna show y'all. My head hurt, bro.
03:56Your head hurt?
03:57What I like to do is the little stunts, you know what I'm saying? Out the window.
04:00So, I've been doing a lot of crazy hanging stunts.
04:03So, like tonight and Sunday will be, it's gonna be that.
04:30Why you shy?
04:33I'm a kid that comes from the ghetto. Like, I'm lucky to have even made it to where I am now.
04:40My dad was the best of influence. How he got brought up in the cars was, he stole cars.
04:46So, he would put me in cars, like he would put me at a young age.
04:50Basically taught me how to drive a car.
04:54So, that phrase, like, drive it like you stole it?
04:56Yeah, drive it like you stole it. Yeah, so, you feel me?
04:59So, any car that he put me in, drive it like you stole it.
05:01Alright, cool.
05:04I kinda took all that, it's like, OK, even though this stuff is kind of illegal,
05:09I can take this negative and turn it into something positive.
05:13I'm gonna be out there, I'm gonna be able to take this negative and turn it into something positive.
05:17Okay, even though like this stuff is kind of illegal. I can take this negative and turn it into a positive
05:25When you're a real slider, it's calming you love it. It's just like it's like an addiction. It's an adrenaline rush
05:32It's just like for me. It's like you just find peace
05:37What would you be doing if you weren't doing this I keep it on I was I was I was up to no good like I
05:44Was doing them. Yeah
05:47like
05:47That would really get you in trouble
05:51That would really get you in trouble man like
05:55honestly, like
05:57This has changed my whole perspective on you know, I I've always wanted to do more in life
06:03But I never knew what I wanted to do
06:17I
06:19Don't know why this video is going viral. I'm almost at a thousand likes right now. I'll tell you
06:42I'm getting sponsorship deals and now it's coming in like there's actual money like every day in your hand
06:49You have money all the apps you use from Facebook snapchat Instagram. You can make money off of all that. It's a new age
07:02Watch the truck go. This is the worst thing ever. Look at that
07:08You see that that ain't how you slide
07:12Oh
07:15That's what you call a mercy break fuller
07:19I'm surprised he ain't running to the pole yet
07:23No, I don't
07:27Like that so the reason why I really like that you feel me I'm be real with you I went from homeless not happiness
07:37After being homeless for like maybe like a year or two
07:40I humbled myself and got myself together
07:42They make it seem like we're a bad like we're a bad thing because this like this is like our outlet and let our anger
07:49out and stuff like that like we want to enjoy ourselves to where we can have fun and
07:53Buy us having fun to do everything that we should do as a car community
07:58I feel like they should just make a legal pit because we really enjoy ourselves. I'm gonna bring you over to EJ
08:03I want to talk to you. This is the first person I ever went viral with on the state troopers page
08:15Just adrenaline really get a pump but I ain't gonna lie. He's been up for a long time. He's gonna get a headache
08:23My hair hurt right now so bad
08:29From the smoke
08:34Hey, I went to jail for last year because I was doing donuts in the intersection who's on the news and everything
08:44Who's a spectator I let in my car and he left like 20 shots and it went viral that video was violent
08:51They got I'm still finding a case to this day. It's great
08:55Yeah, the police don't want to let us do our thing
08:57I mean a lot of people that come out here is you know people that be stressed going through some
09:02Stuff like this car stuff. It really brings people together. This is unfortunate that
09:07That this happens anywhere else people are gonna ruin things for other people
09:11Regardless of what it is. Other people got other intentions when they come to these functions
09:16We all good positive on all the flyers. No violence. No drinking
09:22We promoting it to be as safe as possible
09:25Of course, you have people that's gonna break the rules
09:26You know I'm saying and do what they want to do and that's on them at the end
09:29But falls back on us
09:40Yeah
09:43Summer Street, I posted it on my story. It's post
09:48Man, y'all going towards and we supposed to go away from them. That's why
09:51That's why I did something
09:54Yeah
09:56Yeah, the police definitely up their enforcement
09:59Recently put together a heat task force. They're starting to come in a lot stronger. They're trying to issue
10:05felony criminal damage to property
10:10You know, they're not playing anymore
10:15There's no legal legal spaces with like the city of Minneapolis
10:24If we can compromise like even this month we have a legal pit we're willing to compromise and do it the right way
10:31Once there's a legal lot. I think it'll be a balance
10:36There's tracks and stuff like we can go to but the nearest tracks two and a half hours away
10:40Not a lot of people can make it make it up to that go burn tires and come back. I
10:45Think once we get like the legal lot near the cities
10:49It'll be more balanced out where it will like the police will notice like, okay now they they got this legal lot
10:56They see that. Okay, they kind of calm down. That's why a lot of these kids aren't stopping because there's no legal lot right now
11:04I
11:17Love drag racing. I love I love racing around a track. I love doing donuts
11:21I love you know anything that has to involve this a car. I love I love it
11:33You
