00:00I think I decided I wanted to go into comedy when no other skills had presented themselves.
00:06My dad's a really funny guy and has a very discerning sense of humor, and so the first
00:21time I could make him laugh is the first time I thought I might actually have some talent
00:27at it.
00:28I think my first few sets as an improviser showed enough potential to keep doing it.
00:37I always tried to be in the top half of the people on stage.
00:40I felt like once you dropped out of the top half it was probably time to move on to something
00:43else.
00:57I think performing for an audience that is speaking English as their second language,
01:06you learn to be clear.
01:08That doesn't mean to simplify things, but being a stand-up, being a comedian, being
01:13a storyteller, so much of it is about making sure you're walking the audience down the
01:18road that you want to walk them down.
01:21We really had to dial that in when we were performing for a Dutch audience.
01:26I'm always in debt to them for that.
01:38Who ate my weed gummies?
01:40Wally?
01:41Wally?
01:42You sure it wasn't you?
01:44Whoever it is, I'm very disappointed.
01:47I think it's a necessity more than anything we decided was part of the comedic game plan.
01:56When we address the news, and oftentimes the news is really dark, we realize that putting
02:02in these pockets of whimsy and the space to go take these weird tangents and to introduce
02:08the audience at home to the people on our staff, it just put us in a better mood.
02:12We did that joke mainly to see what kind of upper-body graphics gave me, and once again,
02:18they f***ed me.
02:21We want to provide the same catharsis for them that we're getting from doing the show,
02:24and so creating this extended cinematic universe of characters at late night has been a real
02:29exciting part of it.
02:41Well I would only say to young comedians that you learn, I know this sounds cliche, you
02:46learn so much more from failure than success as a young person, and it's easier to fail
02:52as a youth than it is as an old.
02:55So I would just say, as hard as it is, go out and fail with gusto and know that you're
03:03getting a semester's worth of education from every time you bomb.
