00:00Hi, welcome to Trouble.
00:01When you walk in through the front door,
00:03you'll head towards the bathrooms
00:05and find yourself at our public sinks.
00:07Beside which, you will find Plan B,
00:10condoms, and a good place to wash your hands.
00:20One of the things that we can do by giving away for free
00:22is taking away the stigma.
00:24We give you the open door,
00:25you take the emergency contraception.
00:27That's the end of the transaction.
00:30We've been open since August of 2019,
00:48and we've been carrying emergency contraception
00:50since August of 2019.
00:52It was a priority for us when we opened.
00:56So in the 60s and 70s,
00:58they weren't handing out condoms at schools,
01:00but as the idea of like,
01:02this is just simply something safe for public health
01:05caught on, it's no big deal
01:07for us to give them away at the bar,
01:08and it's not a big deal for them to be available
01:11in the nurse's office in the high school.
01:13The idea that it is widely available to all
01:18is also a misconception.
01:19I mean, we live in the city,
01:20so when we go to the pharmacy,
01:23I'm not worried about the person checking me out,
01:25like knowing who I am.
01:28But if you go to a pharmacy in a small rural town,
01:31like the likelihood that someone you know
01:33or who knows your family could see you
01:36checking out with that,
01:37that really is a barrier, even beyond cost.
01:55I think both of us were very aware
01:57that the idea that our rights,
01:58our bodily autonomy was enshrined in law somehow
02:02and could never be taken away
02:03has never been a privilege
02:05or a thought we've given ourselves.
02:07The real thing was that we made sure
02:10that we never ran out of EC.
02:12We had extra, extra, extra on backup,
02:15and we made sure that we were as public as possible
02:21about the fact that we give it away and it's free,
02:24and we want you to come get some,
02:26and we want you to come get some
02:27for your friends who might need it
02:29or your teenagers who might need it.
02:32And people have realized one great way
02:34to prevent the need for an abortion
02:35is simply to prevent unwanted pregnancies
02:37in the first place.
02:38And if you have this resource, emergency contraception,
02:40you need to get it out there widely.
02:52It functions like a high dose of normal birth control.
02:55It's incredibly safe.
02:57It's available over the counter now.
02:59It is not an abortifacient.
03:00It will not end a pregnancy that has already taken place.
03:04It won't even always necessarily prevent pregnancy.
03:07Some people definitely come in and say,
03:10I'm really glad that I can take this home with me tonight
03:13and not worry about a quick trip to the drugstore
03:16or the next morning.
03:17Sometimes somebody will just be like, bye,
03:19and go straight to the bathroom or walk straight out.
03:20And those are actually the ones that I enjoy
03:22because they're like, I'm just here to grab
03:25and I'm just grabbing and going.
