One year ago, Daunte Wright was fatally shot by a police officer who said she mistook her gun for a Taser.  Here's everything that has happened since then ...

00:09It is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy their taser,

00:13but instead shot Mr. Wright with a single bullet.

00:16When it comes to firing a gun instead of a taser,

00:29what does that say about police training?

00:32It's that police training is unimportant,

00:36and it does nothing.

00:38It does absolutely nothing.

00:40Police training is weak and unimportant.

00:46The officer's actions were absolutely not justified

00:57just because Mr. Wright had a misdemeanor warrant

01:01and may or may not have been trying to get into his car to drive off.

01:06The officer's actions are not justified.

01:09They could never be justified.

01:11Police should never be killing anyone.

01:15There should never be state-sanctioned killings of people in this country.

01:31You cannot train officers when you are functioning within a system

01:37built upon systems of white supremacy.

01:41You cannot train officers to not perpetuate white supremacy

01:46when the institution is there to perpetuate white supremacy

01:50and to exert social control over Black people and Black communities.

01:56You cannot train that out of the system

01:58because it is inherently a part of the system.

02:01There is no training that will stop this.

02:04If there was all the millions of dollars of training

02:08that have been used already in police departments across the country

02:14would result in fewer deaths.

02:16Yet, there are over a thousand people killed by the police every year.

02:21These trainings do not help.

02:24They are a waste of taxpayer money

02:27and are an insult to people demanding transformational change

02:31in our policing institutions.

02:58The more details that come out about the police killing of Daunte Wright, the more upsetting

03:15and disturbing this horrific death becomes.

03:20It is of the utmost importance that we limit what police are responsible for.

03:26They should not be enforcing low-level offenses.

03:28They should not be involved in traffic stops.

03:33There are 10.3 million arrests made every year in this country.

03:36Only 5% of those arrests are for what we consider the most serious offenses.

03:42So things like rape and sexual assault and murder.

03:4595% of those arrests are for low-level non-violent offenses.

03:51Police should not be involved in those.

03:53Because as we've seen so many times, it results in the deaths of black people, and the harm

04:00and trauma in black communities.

04:03I sit there and watch, pouring my heart out in my victim impact statement that took so

04:28long to write, and I read it over and over again.

04:32I tried to not get a response out of the judge, but then when it came down to sentencing

04:39Kim Potter, she broke out in tears.

04:41This is the problem with our justices today.

04:46White women's tears trumps justice.
