00:02Last night police were called to this Fairfield unit to reports of a violent disturbance.
00:08As they got to the unit door they could see blood over the threshold of the doorway and inside the
00:11unit.
00:12Officers tried to speak to an unarmed man inside but shortly after they say he charged towards a female constable.
00:20At that stage she has discharged her firearm hitting the 27 year old male twice in the torso and once
00:26in the arm.
00:27He was rushed to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.
00:32Police are now appealing for more information.
00:35We've identified some CCTV which captures the 27 year old male engaging with two other males outside the unit block
00:42prior to the police arrival.
00:44The incident will be investigated by the Bankstown Local Area Command which will then be independently reviewed by the Professional
00:52Standards Command and overseen by the police watchdog.
00:55For now questions remain about whether lethal force was necessary.
01:00We know that they have less than lethal force options.
01:05Very effective ones too such as tasers and bean bag rounds.
01:11It also depends on the circumstances whether the police can actually see what the offender has in their hands.
01:16So tasers aren't always the best options, sometimes they are, but it's really depending upon the situation.
01:22The female constable is to remain on duty.
