00:00This is Hoda Qamish.

00:11She's a 27-year-old writer and women's rights activist in Afghanistan.

00:15Since the Taliban's return to power, she has taken part in regular protests against the

00:19regime's restrictions of women's rights.

00:22But these protests are systematically suppressed by the Taliban, and on December 28, 2001,

00:35the Taliban shot into the air and used tear gas on 50 or so women who had come to Kabul

00:40to protest peacefully.

00:41The evening before the protest, the Taliban announced new restrictions that specifically

01:07target women.

01:08Among them is a ban that prevents women from traveling by cab further than 45 miles unless

01:13they have a male chaperone.

01:15This restriction is just one among a long list of bans imposed on women by the Taliban

01:20since their return to power in August 2021.
