Ohio officials toast with East Palestine tap water

East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway, Ohio’s Lieutenant Gov. Jon Husted, fire chief Keith Drabick, Anne Vogel director of the Ohio EPA, and Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH) toasted with local tap water to show it’s safe to drink.

00:02These Ohio officials demonstrated that it's safe to drink water from East Palestine with a toast.

00:06You just saw us all drink a glass of water.

00:10Our water here, our municipal water system here in East Palestine is safe.

00:13If you have wild water, please get it tested and please stay away from the creeks and streams.

00:18Yes, they are polluted and yes, we have had fish kills,

00:21but as far as municipal water, it is safe here in East Palestine.

00:24Questions about the safety of the water and air quality in the area

00:27have circulated since a train carrying toxic chemicals derailed on February 3rd.

00:31Now, the EPA is ordering the rail company Norfolk Southern

00:34to pay for cleaning up the mess they created

00:36and for the trauma they've inflicted on this community.

00:39This order will require the company to identify and clean up contaminated areas,

00:43attend public meetings, reimburse the EPA for cleaning services

00:47that will be offered to residents and businesses,

00:49and pay for the EPA's operating costs.
