00:00Legendary pop and jazz singer Tony Bennett has died at 96.

00:09in San Francisco

00:17The American showman, whose career spanned eight decades with a number one album at the age of 85,

00:22died on Friday morning in his hometown of New York. No specific cause was given.

00:27In 2021, Bennett revealed that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease five years earlier,

00:32but continued to perform and record into the later years of his life.

00:36His last public appearance was in 2021 with Lady Gaga at Radio City Music Hall,

00:41two months before his final album release, Love for Sale,

00:44a sequel to the two's first collaborative project, Cheek to Cheek.

00:47Lady Gaga reflected on that final performance with Tony Bennett,

00:50explaining the importance of music in his life and the effect it had during his Alzheimer's battle.

00:54When jazz begins, this man lights up in a way that is such magic. It just reminded me that

01:03anybody that has a family member or somebody that they love that's suffering from Alzheimer's or

01:08dementia, music is... music is magic. As the winner of 19 Grammy Awards,

01:18two Emmy Awards, a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award, and more,

01:23many can agree with the late Frank Sinatra, who once called Bennett,

01:26the greatest popular singer in the world.
