00:00Did you know that this Stranger Things character is inspired by a true crime story?
00:04His name is Eddie Munson, metal fan, leader of the Hellfire Club, and also the prime suspect
00:08in the death of cheerleader Chrissy Cunningham. His story is reminiscent of the phenomenon known
00:12as Satanic Panic, which took over the public consciousness of middle America in the 1980s.
00:17It was a collective fear that devil-worshipping cults were corrupting the minds of younger
00:21generations. This was further amplified by the media, which often honed in on those who
00:26embraced 90s metal culture. Satanic Panic reached its peak in 1993, when three 8-year-old boys were
00:31found dead in Arkansas. It is widely believed that the murders were committed as part of a
00:36satanic ritual. Three teenagers were arrested in connection to the murders. Two were sentenced to
00:40life in prison and one to the death penalty. However, in 2010, their convictions were overturned
00:46and all three were released from prison. In a recent tweet, Netflix confirmed that Eddie's
00:50character is loosely modeled after one of the members of the West Memphis Three. Joseph Quinn,
00:54the actor who plays Eddie, also confirmed that Satanic Panic is at the spine of his character.
