00:00Right now it's banned books week. So what books are being banned most in 2022 and how does this
00:05week help? Brooke can explain in less than 60 seconds. Believe it or not books are still being
00:09challenged and banned at an alarming rate right now. Especially children's and young adult books
00:14about black and lgbtq plus people. According to pen america, a group dedicated to protecting the
00:19freedom of expression, 41 percent of books banned in 2022 had minority main characters and 31 percent
00:27had lgbtq plus characters. Now in case you didn't catch on banned books week does not celebrate the
00:32actual banning of books. It's a celebration of the freedom to access ideas and the freedom to
00:38read what everyone chooses. It encourages people to speak out and push back against censorship
00:43and defend materials being banned. The coalition behind the annual week also provides support,
00:48light legal representation to schools, libraries, retailers, publishers and any other institution
00:55facing challenges and bans. Tell us which banned books you're reading this week in the comments.
