Man exonerated after 34 years in prison

Sidney Holmes, who was serving a 400-year prison sentence, has been exonerated after 34 years behind bars.

00:00A 57-year-old man was just released from prison after being wrongly jailed for 34 years.

00:07Sidney Holmes was serving a 400-year sentence for an armed robbery that happened in 1988.

00:13On Monday, he was exonerated and walked out of prison in Broward County, Florida to be

00:17greeted by his family.

00:18I never gave up.

00:19It's been 35 years, but I never gave up.

00:20My family was always by me the whole time.

00:26In 2020, Holmes reached out to the Conviction Review Unit, who launched a re-investigation.

00:31CRU found that an eyewitness likely misidentified him, partly due to the photo and lineup practices

00:37used at the time.

00:38Other than the eyewitness identification, there was no evidence tying him to the crime.

00:42And if the crime happened today, authorities would not have charged him.
