James Webb Telescope discovers massive galaxies

Researchers believe they have found massive, old galaxies, which could change our understanding of how galaxies have formed and evolved. These findings were published in the scientific journal Nature.

00:00New findings from the James Webb Space Telescope could challenge what astronomers know about the beginning of the universe.

00:06These six red dots, seen in one of the telescope's first images,

00:10are estimated to be massive galaxies that existed between 500 and 700 million years after the start of the universe.

00:17And, although the telescope has spotted other, older galaxies,

00:21what struck researchers about these was their large size and maturity.

00:26Each of the six galaxies are estimated to be as mature as our very own Milky Way galaxy.

00:31Researchers said it's also possible these galaxies are something else entirely,

00:36and that they will need to get a more detailed look to confirm.
