00:05movies, but we need to talk about the impact it could have on academia and certain jobs.

00:09ChatGPT was made available to the public last week by OpenAI,

00:12an artificial intelligence company co-founded by Elon Musk. Specifically programmed to simulate

00:16human conversation from a given prompt, ChatGPT can write in different voices and

00:20moods as well as customizable lengths. The language model has since gone viral on social

00:24media, with people instructing the tool to write essays, poems, computer code,

00:29and even dating app responses. On Twitter, professors and those in academia have already

00:33expressed concerns that the program could be used to answer essay prompts and change the

00:37way assignments are administered. Essays written by ChatGPT have been able to pass

00:41anti-plagiarism software such as Turnitin. Programmers and journalists have also shared

00:46in the concern, saying that these programs could replace them and take over their jobs.

00:50Within a week of its release, ChatGPT has already garnered 1 million users.

00:54OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said while the bot is currently free for testing,

00:58it will be monetized in the future.
