00:04cult members believed they would go to heaven if they starved themselves. At least 58 people
00:09died in the mass starvation, according to Kenyan police, and 50 of those bodies were
00:13found in shallow graves. According to Reuters, authorities were able to rescue at least 29
00:19survivors.
00:20Followers of the alleged cult, called Good News International Church, were living in
00:24secluded areas in the Shakahola Forest. Now, some 800 acres of the forest have been declared
00:29a crime scene, according to Kenya's Secretary for Interior and National Administration.
00:35The cult's leader, Paul MacKenzie, was arrested on April 14 after authorities received a tip
00:39about the graves. MacKenzie is in police custody, but some media outlets have reported that
00:43he is refusing food and water.
