Italy’s most-wanted Mafia boss Messina Denaro arrested in Sicily

Messina Denaro, Italy’s most wanted mobster, was just arrested after spending 30 years on the run. Italian police arrested him on Monday.

00:12In the past, he had been convicted in absentia for multiple crimes,

00:17including murder, and received a life sentence.

00:20Dinaro was arrested inside an Italian private health clinic,

00:23where he was receiving treatment for cancer under an assumed name.

00:26According to The Guardian, Dinaro tried to escape his capture,

00:30but ultimately surrendered to police without resistance.

00:33After the mobster was arrested, residents of Palermo applauded in the streets.

00:37The last known photo of Dinaro was taken in the early 1990s.

00:41In recent years, several relatives of the Mafia mobster have been arrested,

00:46including his sister.

00:47Dinaro was reportedly elected to succeed Toto Rina, who was arrested in January 1993.
